Nylen Earns Atlantic Hockey Defensive Player of the Week

FAIRFIELD, Conn.-- Sacred Heart men's ice hockey senior captain Mitch Nylen was named Atlantic Hockey Travel Team USA Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending December 11, 2016. Nylen picked up one assist on Friday night and a shorthanded game winning goal in the third annual Jason Pagni Memorial game on Saturday to split weekend series against Mercyhurst.

It is his second Atlantic Hockey Defensive Player of the Week honor, earning the weekly honor in his sophomore season for his two assists and plus four rating in Sacred Heart's sweep of Army in the first round of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament on March 10, 2015. 

In Friday's 5-3 loss to Mercyhurst, Nylen picked up one assist on the and led the Pioneers penalty kill to a perfect three-for-three on the night. He carried his strong play over to Saturday, as he and the Pioneers defense had another clean sheet on the penalty kill (6-6). Nylen picked up the game winning shorthanded goal to give Sacred Heart the 3-2 victory. He has has registered a point in six straight contests.

The Pioneers will have a nice break before continuing its homestand on December 30-31 against Air Force. The opening faceoff for both games will be at 3:00pm at Webster Bank Arena.
