Pioneers Hosts First Place Canisius For a Two-Game Series

Setting the Scene... The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team returns home to Webster Bank Arena, hosting Atlantic Hockey frontrunner Canisius for a two-game series. 

Last Time Out... Freshman Vito Bavaro picked up the game winning goal 1:53 into overtime to give SHU the 4-3 win over Mercyhurst last Saturday. Seniors Mitch Nylen, Erlich Doerksen and Jeff Carroll each recorded a goal in regulation. Sophomores Zach De Concilys and Liam Clare both recorded two assists on the night. Sophomore Brett Magnus recorded 22 saves for his eighth win of the season. 

All -Time vs. Canisius... The Golden Griffs lead the all-time series 26-20-5. Canisius holds a 5-4-1 edge over the Pioneers in the last 10 meetings. Sacred Heart has won the last three matchups.

Last Meeting... The Pioneers held off a late Canisius comeback to record the 4-3 win in the last meeting on February 20, 2016. After an early goal the Golden Griffs, Sacred Heart added four consecutive goals to take the 4-1 lead. Evan Jasper recorded two goals while Justin Danforth and Adam Durkee netted the other two. Canisius bounced back with two goals in the final minutes on the extra attacker to bring the score to 4-3. Brett Magnus recorded 29 saves in goal for the Pioneers. 

Scouting The Golden Griffs... Canisius enters the weekend 15-10-5, 14-4-5 in Atlantic Hockey. The Griffs are riding the nations longest unbeaten streak at 10 games into the weekend (8-0-2). Leading the offense is Dylan McLaughlin (11-14-25) and Ryan Schmelzer (10-14-24). Goaltender Charles William leads the nation with a .946 save percentage and boasts a 1.80 goals against average.  Canisius currently ranks sixth in the country in scoring defense at 2.16 goals per game and fourth in penalty kill at 87.9%.

Clare Dishes Way to Atlantic Hockey DPOW… Sophomore defenseman Liam Clare earned Atlantic Hockey Defensive Player of the week for his three-assist weekend this past week. Clare had the lead helper on Justin Danforth's game tying goal in Friday's 2-2 tie at Mercyhurst. He continued his stellar passing to Saturday for his fifth multi-assist game of the season in 4-3 overtime win. Clare leads the team and Atlantic Hockey defenseman with 19 assists.
