ROCHESTER, N.Y.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team defeated RIT tonight by a final score of 4-3 courtesy of an overtime netter by senior Mike Lee. The team will look for the two game sweep tomorrow as puck-drop is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
The Tigers would be the first team to get on the board as they scored a goal at 13:56 courtesy of Ryan Kruper to put RIT ahead 1-0. But SHU would not let the first period pass without a goal as Marcel Godbout would tally his third goal of the season off a pair of assists by Stephan Hladin and freshman Todd Goehring to tie the game up at 1-1 at 15:15. SHU outshot the Tigers 12-11 in the first period as well.
In the second, the Pioneers would be the only team to score as senior Mike Lee would net his second goal of the season off assists by freshman Ryan Steele as a well as secondary assist by Vito Bavaro at 15:33 to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead heading into the third and final period.
But RIT wouldn't go away as they would net the first goals of the third period to put the Tigers ahead 3-2 at 3:24. It would be eight minutes later when Jason Cotton would answer back with a power-play goal at 11:30 to tie the game up a 3-3 and to send the game into overtime.
Then it would be Lee again scoring his second goal of the game and third of the season after he got some help by Cotton and Marc Johnstone to put the game away in overtime with just five seconds remaining in the period. With the win, the Pioneers improve 4-8-2 on the year and 4-6-1 in Atlantic Hockey League play.
