Men's Ice Hockey Returns Home to Face AIC on Tuesday

Setting the Scene... The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team return home to face-off against Atlantic Hockey rival AIC on Tuesday night.

Last Time Out... The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team fell to Vermont by a final score of 3-2 on Saturday, January 4. Sophomore Jordan Kaplan and freshman Ryan Steele each tallied a goal for the Pioneers.

Last Meeting... The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey was unable to erase a two-goal deficit, falling to AIC 4-1 on November 11, 2017 at the MassMutual Center. The Pioneers (3-8-0, 1-5-0 AHA) were able to get within one goal in the second period but the Yellow Jackets (4-6-2, 3-3-2 AHA) capitalized in the third to take the season series sweep. Jason Cotton recorded his fourth goal of the season for SHU, his third tally in the last four games. Stephen Hladin & Matt Tugnutt assisted on the play. Nathan Perry made 26 saves between the pipes for the Pioneers. Scouting The Yellow Jackets... AIC is coming off a recnt loss to top ranked opponett UMASS as they fell 6-1 to drop the team's overall record to 8-9-1 on the year. The Yellow Jackets are currently led by sophomore forward Tobias Fladeby who currently leads the team with nine goals on the year. On the assists front the AIC is lead by junior forward Blake Christensen who currently leads the team with 13 assists. In the back of the net AIC is led by Zackarias Skog who has played in 12 games for AIC and has a record of 5-6-0 and tallies a GAA of 3.03 while compiling a save percentage of 88.6.

Godbout Heats Up... Sophomore Marcel Godbout has been on a hot streak as he has tallied a total of two goals in the past five games including one against Canisius this past weekend. He also recorded an assist in the Canisus series as well. He scored his first collegiate goal in the teams matchup against Army West Point on Nov 10.

Benson and Lee Earn Atlantic Hockey Honors: Senior defenseman Mike Lee and freshman goalie Josh Benson each received weekly awards for their performances against RIT. Senior defenseman Mike Lee scored two goals, blocked two shots, and finished plus-4 as Sacred Heart swept a pair of road games at RIT last weekend. Lee's goals both came in Friday's 4-3 overtime victory, his first giving Sacred Heart a 2-1 lead in the second period and his second coming with five seconds left in the overtime period to give the Pioneers a dramatic victory. Benson had an impressive weekend as he tallied a total of 59 saves and was earned 2 wins he now has three on the year. He tallied a GAA of 3.36 for the series and currently now has a GAA of 2.26 which is the best on the team. He also compiled a save percentage of .885 in the series while now leading the team in save percentage with .918.

Freshman Finding There Way: This years freshman class is showing impressive growth as they have scored a total of seven goals and ten assists for a total of 17 points. Freshman Todd Goehring netted his first career goal in the Canisius series while Austin Magera and Ryan Steele each compiled assists. Steele recorded one while Magera tallied two. Johnstone the Assist Machine: Sophomore Marc Johnstone tallied his eighth assist of the season after Saturday nights game against Vermont. He currently ranks tied for 29th in the Atlantic Hockey Association is assists.
