FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team keeps play at home ice this weekend as the Pioneers look to gain points in the Atlantic Hockey standings with a two game series against Holy Cross. The first game is set for Friday with a 7:05 p.m. puck-drop while the final game of the two game set will take place this Saturday for a 2:05 p.m. puck-drop.
Last Time Out... The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team took the first game of a two game set against Atlantic Hockey rival as the Pioneers defeated the Falcons 3-1 on Saturday followed by a 2-2 tie with Air Force the second night. Freshman Austin Magera had the best performance for the Pioneers in the two games as he tallied a total of two goals and two assists resulting in four points. He nailed the game winner in the first game against Air Force as he scored the second goal to put the Pioneers up 2-1.
Scouting The Crusaders... The Crusaders dropped a 4-1 decision at #6 Quinnipiac on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Patrick O'Leary scored the lone Holy Cross goal and captured his first collegiate goal on the play. Goalie Tommy Nixon returned to net for the first time since Oct. 13 and posted 31 saves. Johnny Coughlin now ranks second in the Holy Cross record books in career goals from a defenseman (16), and fifth in defensive points (57). Rookie Anthony Vincent is tied with Coughlin for the lead in assists, each with 11. Vincent ranks second among his teammates in points (1-11-12). Vincent has posted six assists in his last seven games played. In 2019, the senior class has produced 20 points (11-9-20), accounting for 46% of the team's points. The seniors have recorded 11 of the team's 18 goals in 2019, contributing 61%.In league games, Holy Cross' power play ranks second, scoring on 10 of 49 opportunities (20.4%).
Last Meeting... The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team was unable to complete a late third-period comeback, falling to Holy Cross, 4-2 on Saturday night at the Hart Center. The Pioneers (5-14-4, 3-10-4 AHA) cut the deficit to one at 3-2 with two minutes to go but were unable to stop the Crusaders (9-8-7, 8-4-6) who skated away with the weekend sweep. Senior Kory Kennedy and redshirt sophomore Jason Cotton picked up the two Pioneer goals on the night. Freshman Jordan Kaplan registered a multi-assist night for SHU. Sophomore Vito Bavaro and freshman Alex Bates also recorded helpers for the Pioneers. Junior goaltender Brett Magnus turned away 29 shots in net for SHU.
Magera Madness... Freshman Austin Magera led the Pioneers in the last series against Air Force as he tallied two goals and two assists in those games. Magera is currently tied for second on team in goals with five on the year and is second on team in assists with nine just one shy of leader Marc Johnstone. Magera has scored a goal for SHU in three of the past five games.
Sophomores Leading the Way.... This years sophomore class has been thegroup to follow for the Pioneers as they lead the team with a total of 39 points on the season tallying 18 goals and 21 assists. The class is run by sophomore Jordan Kaplan who leads the team with six goals and has three assists for a total of nine points.
Kaplan Capitalizes for Pioneers.... Sophomore Jordan Kaplan has been on a goal streak these past few games for the Pioneers as he has tallied three goals in the past four games for SHU. Kaplan delivered nicely for the Pioneers in 3-1 victory against Air Force as he tallied two goals. Kaplan currently leads the team in goals with six.
