FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team continues Atlantic Hockey play with a home-and-home set against Holy Cross beginning Friday at 7:05 p.m. in Bridgeport at Webster Bank Arena.
Last Time Out... The Pioneers split a two-game series against Air Force last week taking the first game in convincing fashion 7-1 while being edged in the second game 4-3. First-year Braeden Tuck was the highlight of the first game tallying his first-collegiate goal as well as having two assists for three points in the game.
Last Meeting... The Pioneers took one of two games against Holy Cross that took place January 25, and 26, 2019 at Webster Bank Arena. SHU was able to defeat the Crusaders in the first game by a score of 5-2 as goals by senior Mike Lee, sophomores Austin Magera, and Nick Boyagian as well as a goal by senior Vito Bavaro all in the third period pushed the Pioneers to a 5-2 victory. In the second game SHU dropped to Holy Cross by a final score of 4-1. Junior Marc Johnstone recorded the lone goal for the Pioneers in the loss.
Scouting The Crusaders... Holy Cross is coming off a pair of games at Atlantic Hockey rival RIT as they dropped the first game by a final score of 7-4 and tied the second 1-1. This season Holy Cross has a record of 1-2-3 and 0-1-1 in league play. Leading the Crusaders is sophomore Conner Jean who currently has four goals on the season while senior forward Neil Robinson leads the team in points with six consisting of five assists and one goal. Guarding the net for Holy Cross is freshman Matt Radomsky who has played in all four games in net and currently has a GAA of 2.38 with a save percentage of .910 and an overall record of 1-1-2.
Luukko Looking Good... In Saturday's series finale against Air Force junior defenseman Max Luukko netted his first collegiate goal just 3:12 into the first period to even the score at 1-1. Luukko currently has three points on the year which is one short of a career high.
Captains Taking Charge... Co-Captains Jason Cotton and Marc Johnstone have a combined points total of 16 while recording seven goals and nine assists. Cotton has tallied the teams shorthanded goals for the Pioneers as well while Johnstone is tied for second on team in assists. Both players had solid nights in the teams 7-1 victory over Air Force as Johnstone nailed a goal and an assist while Cotton had a goal in the game as well.
Tuck Tastic... First-year Braeden Tuck extended his point streak to four games with a five-point weekend for SHU in a weekend split with Air Force. He tallied his first collegiate goal and also had two assists as well as finished +4 in a 7-1 win on Friday. He then added two more assists as the Pioneers tried to rally in a 4-3 loss to the Falcons on Saturday. Tuck currently leads the team and is tied for second in Atlantic Hockey in assists with seven on the year. He is also second on team in points with a total of eight on the year. Because of his impressive play against the Falcons, he was tabbed Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week.
Pioneers Taking Over Atlantic Hockey.....SHU currently has four players that are at the top of the Atlantic Hockey overall stat charts which include seniors Vito Bavaro, Jason Cotton and junior Matt Tugnutt each tied for the league in goals with five this season. Meanwhile, first-year Braeden Tuck is tied for second in the league in assists with seven and senior Austin McIlmurray is tied for first in the league in power-play goals with four. As a team SHU currently leads Atlantic Hockey in scoring offense with 3.38 goals per game.
