Men's Ice Hockey Hits the Road to Face Boston University Tuesday

FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team hits the road to take on non-conference opponent Boston University on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. puck-drop. The game will be streamed on CBS All-Access. 

Last Time Out... The Pioneers split a two-game home-and-home against Holy Cross on Nov. 21-22 as SHU fell in the first game at Webster Bank Arena by a final score of 4-3 while prevailing in the away match the following day with a 4-1 victory. Junior Matt Tugnutt tallied two goals in the win including the teams fourth short handed goal of the year. Senior Austin McIlmurray recorded his ninth goal of the year and his seventh power-play goal of the year while junior Marcus Joseph cashed in his first career goal which began the scoring for the Pioneers.  

Last Meeting... The Pioneers fell to Boston University a couple seasons ago on Oct. 21, 2016 when SHU was shut-out by final score of 7-0 at Boston University. The Terriers fired off two goals in the opening period while recording seven goals in the third. Goalie Brett Magnus tallied 33 saves in the loss. 

Scouting The Terriers... Boston University is coming off a pair of games at Hockey East rival Vermont as they took the first game 3-0, and tied the second 3-3 on Nov. 22-23. Leading the Terriers is junior David Farrance who currently has 10 goals on the season with nine assists which leads the team in goals and points with 19. Guarding the net for Boston University is graduate student Sam Tucker who has played in 12 games in net and currently has a GAA of 2.58 with a save percentage of .913 and an overall record of 4-2-5. Overall on the year, Boston University sits tied for fourth in the Hockey East with an overall record of 4-4-5 and a conference record of 3-3-4. 

At the 100 Career Game Mark... Seniors Jason Cotton and Mike Lee are quickly approaching their 100th career games as Tuesday's game against BU will be Lee's and the following game against AIC on Dec. 3 will be Cotton's. The two are putting up impressive career years as Lee is just two assists short of his career high 15 and currently is tied for first in Atlantic Hockey in assists while he is tied for ninth in the nation in assists per game with one per game. Cotton is tied for first in Atlantic Hockey in goals with nine on the year and currently leads the nation in short handed goals with three. He is just three goals off his career high of 12 on the year which he tallied in the 2017-18 season. 

Joseph Jumping on Goals.... Junior Marcus Joseph netted his first career goal in the Pioneers 4-1 victory over Holy Cross on Nov. 22. Joseph currently has 1 goal and 1 assist for two points on the year. 

Seniors Shining.....This years senior class that consists of Mike Lee, Jason Cotton, Austin McIlmurray and Vito Bavaro currently lead all the classes in points and goals as the seniors have generated 53 points off 27 goals and 26 assists. Out of the group Jason Cotton leads the way with nine goals and five assists for 14 points. Senior Mike Lee also has 14 points with one goal and 13 assists. Lee, Cotton and McIlmurray out of the senior class are all tied for first in Atlantic Hockey in points with 14. 

Pios Leading the Nation.... Heading into this weeks game, the Pioneers claim top spots in different statistical categories in the national stats. Senior Austin McIlmurray is second in the nation in power-play goals with seven on the year, while senior Jason Cotton leads the nation in short-handed goals with three. Senior Mike Lee sits in ninth in the nation in defensemen points per game with 1.08 points per game while first-year Braeden Tuck sits eight in the nation in freshman points per game with 1.00. The Pioneers as a team are in the top ten in nation in scoring offense as well sitting eighth with an average of 3.64 goals per game. 

Who's On the Power-Play?.... The Pioneers have been a dominate force while the team was short-handed as SHU has recorded four short-handed goals already on the season. Last season, the Pioneers recorded nine for a whooping combined 13 shorty's in the past two seasons. Senior Jason Cotton currently leads the nation in short handed goals with three while junior Matt Tugnutt tallied his first of year in Friday's 4-1 victory over Holy Cross. 

We Know McIlmurray is....Senior Austin McIlmurray recorded his seventh power-play goal of the season in the Pioneers win against Holy Cross on Nov. 22. The senior has tallied at least one power-play goal in six of the 14 games he has played in this season. He has surpassed his career high in power-play goals as his previous career high was four from last season. McIlmurray is currently second in the nation in power-play goals behind Boston University's David Farrance who has eight. McIlmurray is also on a five game point streak.
