Worcester, MA - The Sacred Heart men’s ice hockey team got a pair of goals from Nick Johnson (Windsor, CT) including the game winner late in the third period as SHU defeated Holy Cross 5-3 Saturday night. Freshman Eric Delong (Oakville, MB) pitched in three assists as the Pioneers completed a weekend sweep of the Crusaders. Johnson and Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) both earned their 100th career point in the Saturday night win.

Holy Cross (10-17-5, 9-13-4 AHA) nearly had the game’s first goal just 3:45 into the opening period on a slap shot from Kyle Atkins. The puck beat SHU goaltender Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC), who made 32 total saves, but rang off the right post to keep the game scoreless. The Pioneers would strike first with a power play goal at the 13:22 mark off the stick of Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON). Jarman ripped a slap shot from the high slot to give SHU a 1-0 advantage, Delong and Paul Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) earned assists on the play. The Pioneers nearly took a 2-0 lead at the end of the frame but Matt Gingera’s (Winnipeg, MB) pinged off the right post.

Sacred Heart (18-10-4, 16-7-3 AHA) swarmed the Crusaders early in the second period and just missed going up 2-0 on the power play. Tysowsky made two great saves for Holy Cross turning away point blank shots from Gingera and Patrick Knowlton (Colorado Springs, CO). The Crusaders would tie the game at the midway mark of the frame on a power play marker of their own. Matt Clune bounced his wrist shot off the crossbar and in to knot the game at one.

Johnson would put the Pioneers back on top just 17 seconds later as he broke the SHU single season goal record with his 24th of 2009-10. The senior forward threw the shot towards the net from a sharp angle, the puck ricocheted off Tysowsky and into the cage, also giving Johnson his 100th career point. Delong looked to extend the Pioneer advantage to 3-1 but was robbed a great save from Tysowsky with 1:15 to play in the second period.

The Crusaders would use the ensuing rush to tie the game with Sheen’s 9th goal of the season to send the game into the second intermission tied at two. The Crusaders Luke Miller had a golden chance to give his team the lead with 12:00 remaining in regulation but he rang yet another shot off the goal post. After the miss he was smashed into the boards by Johnson, Miller then grabbed the stick of the SHU attacker to draw a penalty. The Pioneers would score off the Miller infraction as Ferraro wristed a shot through traffic and past the Holy Cross goaltender to once again put the Pioneers in front.

Holy Cross continued to fight though and leveled the game for the third time just over a minute later as Matt Celin lit the lamp with the extra attacker on the ice. Johnson netted his second marker of the game with 4:36 on the clock as he banged home a one timer, Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) notched his NCAA leading 34th assist on the play. Boisvert iced the game with an empty net goal with 35 seconds left to give SHU the 5-3 win and earn his 100th career point.

The Pioneers are 15-1-2 in their last 18 games and have won five straight. The win guarantees Sacred Heart home ice in the semifinal round of the Atlantic Hockey tournament. SHU closes out the regular season on the road next weekend as they travel to Colorado to take on Air Force.
