SOMERSET, N.J. – Sacred Heart men's lacrosse senior defender Joseph Cipoletti was named the Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Cipoletti's first career weekly honor comes on the heels of his terrific performance at then-No. 18 nationally-ranked Georgetown on Saturday. The senior totaled a game-high four caused turnovers to go along with five ground balls in the closely-contested 13-10 loss to the Hoyas.
After starting one game in his first two seasons as a Pioneer, Cipoletti made a name for himself last season as his breakout junior campaign included 14 starts in 15 games played while totaling 40 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers in 2018. His 24 caused turnovers led the team and ranked 21st in the nation and third in the NEC on a per-game basis (1.53).
His breakthrough junior campaign is rolling his 2019 season as the now senior finished just one shy of matching his career high in both caused turnovers and ground balls in Saturday's loss to Georgetown.
Cipoletti and the Pioneers are back in action on Saturday at 11 AM with a neutral site meeting with Furman. The two sides will play for the third straight season at a neutral site, with this year's showdown set for Radnor High School in Philadelphia.
