Men's Lacrosse Ends Skid with 10-5 Win at Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Sacred Heart men’s lacrosse team ended a four game losing streak with a 10-5 road win over Wagner Wednesday afternoon.  The win improved the Pioneers to 2-5 on the season, while the Seahawks dropped to 0-5.


Sacred Heart trailed early as Wagner scored the first two goals of the game.  With goals from sophomore Matt Ferrino (Orchard Park, NY) and senior Timmy Katz (Freeport, NY) the Pioneers tied it at two by the end of the first quarter.


Senior attack Evan Morgan (Ashburn, NY) gave SHU the lead 1:27 into the second with a man-up goal.  Wagner junior attack Will Macumber tied the game a little over a minute later.  The Pioneers answered with three goals, two by senior Jon Flood (Hauppauge, NY), to take a 6-3 lead into the locker room.


Sacred Heart built on their lead by outscoring the Seahawks 4-2 in the second half.  Sophomore Chris Casey (Duxbury, MA) and freshman Bryan Badolato (West Islip, NY) scored two apiece.


Katz finished the game with a goal and two assists for the Pioneers.  Sophomore attack Mike Scheerer was Wagner’s leading scorer with two goals.


Senior Tom Trgo (N. Merrick, NY) saved 11 shots in the cage for the Red & White.  Wagner senior goalie Michael Gutkin made seven stops for the Seahawks.


For the game, SHU outshot Wagner 34-28 and was successful on 21 of 23 clear attempts.


The Pioneers return home Saturday night for a 7:00 pm game against Hartford under the lights on Campus Field.
