Denver Rolls Past SHU Men's Lacrosse, 19-7

FAIRFIELD, CT (March 26, 2005) - University of Denver senior Matt Brown scored seven goals to lead the Pioneers to a 19-7 win over Sacred Heart University Saturday afternoon. Denver led 8-4 at the half and cemented the win with an eight goal third quarter as they improve to 4-2 overall on the year. SHU falls to 4-3 with the loss.

Denver struck first on the afternoon as freshman Michael Goltra connected on his third goal of the season at 12:16. Sacred Heart came right back and answered with three-straight to take a 3-1 lead with 6:26 to play. SHU's Matthew Robideau (Massena, NY) scored off a pass from junior Kiel Adams (Rome, NY) followed by freshman Billy Fuch's (Merrick, NY) marker from sophomore Derek Platt (Annapolis, MD). Sophomore Peter Greco (Hamburg, NY) finished the run off with an unassisted man-up goal.

UD's Brown struck for his first, man-up, with 3:48 left in the quarter to bring the Pioneers to within 3-2. That's where the tide would turn for Sacred Heart as Denver closed out the quarter scoring three goals in the span of 24 seconds. Freshman Brett Koll scored at 1:06 off a pass from Greer Hanlon. Off the ensuing face-off, junior Adam Swain buried and unassisted goal just five second later. Junior Geoff Snider finished off the UD flurry with an unassisted tally with 43 seconds left as Denver led 5-3 after one.

SHU cut the lead back to one scoring their second man-up goal of the game with 10:19 on the clock. Fuch's finished a freshman Kieran Carney (Yorktown Heights, NY) pass for his second score on the afternoon. The would be as close as Sacred Heart would come as Denver ripped off nine-straight goals spanning the second and third quarters to take command en route to victory.

The Pioneers closed the first half with two more Brown goals sandwiched around a sophomore Ryan Zordani score. Denver's Hanlon scored 51 seconds into the third quarter followed by a sophomore Brandon Barcus goal and another Brown tally just seven second apart. Denver freshman Brett Koll scored his first of the day next followed by two more from Brown to end the streak at 4:09 of the third. SHU's Christian Lynch (Northport, NY) finally stopped the bleeding for Pioneers, scoring off an Adams pass.

Denver closed the third with two more tallies and then opened the fourth with three-straight, including Brown's seventh, as their lead peaked at 19-5. SHU scored the final two goals of the day, one from Carney and another man-up goal by Greco.

In addition to Brown's seven goals, Hanlon finished with four points on two goals and two assists and Barcus had four points of his own on a score and three helpers. Snider finished the day with three scores, six ground balls and 13 of 17 on face-offs. Denver out shot Sacred Heart 37-14 after three periods and 42-24 on the day.

Sacred Heart returns to action next Saturday, April 2nd when the open the Colonial Athletic Association schedule at Delaware. Face-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
