Pioneer Men's Lacrosse Fall to Villanova, 15-9, in CAA Finale

FAIRFIELD, CT (April 23, 2005) - Sacred Heart senior Christian Lynch (Northport, NY) scored five goals on "Senior Day" but the Pioneers came up short, falling to Villanova University, 15-9, in Colonial Athletic Association lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. After a 4-4 first quarter, the Wildcats outscored SHU in the second quarter, 5-0, to take control en route to the win.

Villanova struck first, taking a 2-0 lead on goals by Matt Starker and Mike Haas in the first five minutes of play. Lynch scored his first of the day at the 9:22 mark to get the Pioneers on the board. The Wildcats would make it 4-1 after scored by Tim Atkins and Eric Heidenberger. SHU closed the quarter on a 3-0 run started by sophomore Peter Greco (Hamburg, NY) who finished a junior Kevin Walker (Rochester, NY) pass.

Junior Kiel Adams (Rome, NY) made it 4-2 off a feed from Matt Robideau (Massena, NY) at 3:59 and sophomore Rory Morse (E. Falmouth, MA) finished the run with a man-up goal a 2:25. The second quarter belonged to the Wildcats as they buried five of the 10 shots taken in the quarter while holding the Pioneers scoreless. Dan Fanelli started the run just nine seconds into the quarter and Brendan O'Donnell finished it with just 10 ticks left as the Wildcats went into the half with a 9-4 advantage.

SHU climbed to within 9-6 in the opening minutes of the third on a pair of Lynch goals at 12:19 and 12:00, the second coming off a feed from Adams. Another Villanova run gave the Wildcats a 12-6 lead with 5:32 left in the quarter. Chris Kramer, Starker and Heidenberger all found the back of the SHU cage to give Villanova a six goal cushion.

Another Lynch goal at the 1:44 mark was answered by Jon Urbana's first career goal just 25 seconds later to give the Wildcats a 13-7 advantage after three. `Nova struck quickly again to start the fourth as Fanelli tallied his second of the day. Pioneer scores by Walker and Lynch, his fifth, got SHU to within 14-9 but that would be as closed as they could come as the Wildcats tacked one more on in the closing seconds.

Villanova, now 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the CAA, was led by Starker who scored three goals and added an assist to his stat column. He also led the team with five ground balls in the win. Both Heidenberger and Fanelli each finished with three points apiece. Joe Canuso made 11 saves in the cage in earning the win for the Wildcats.

Lynch led all scorers with his career-high five goal effort. SHU got a goal and an assist apiece from Greco, Adams and Robideau. The Pioneers have now lost seven straight and fall to 4-8 overall on the year. SHU wraps up the CAA portion of the schedule with out a win at 0-5.

The Pioneers recognized seven graduating seniors this afternoon who have contributed both on and off the field to the success of the Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team over the past four years. Seniors Christian Lynch, Tom Latronica, Dana White, Ed Kitt, Chris Rosas, Jeff Monaco and Blake Reardon all were honored, along with their parents, before today's game.

The Pioneers will close the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday, April 27 hosting Holy Cross at 5 pm.
