Men's Soccer Falls to Mount, 2-1, Hurting Playoff Chances

Emmitsburg. MD - Steven Cant and Nick Kostov each tallied a goal and an assist to lift Mount St. Mary's past Sacred Heart 2-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Friday.

The loss im a damaging blow to the Pioneers playoff hopes. Sacred Heart (7-9-1, 3-5-0 NEC) must beat Monmouth in the seaosn finale Sunday and get help from other teams to qualify for the NEC tournament.

Cant scored off a Kostov goal in the first half and then helped return the favor in the second half by dishing the ball ahead to Neill Ouska in the 46th minute for the decisive goal. Cant has recorded two goals and two assists in his last two games.

Mark Murphy moved into fourth place on the program's all-time minutes played list with 4473 minutes played. The senior also had seven saves in the game for the Mount (3-9-4, 1-4-3 NEC), who continues its unbeaten streak against the Pioneers to eight matches.

Sophomore David Backman (Gothenburg, Sweden) notched Sacred Heart's (7-9-1, 3-5-0 NEC) lone goal in the contest off an Anthony Anzevui (Newcastle, England) helper and Mathew Jones turned away one shot in the loss.

The Mountaineers scored twice in the first 46 minutes and held on to end a 12-game winless streak.

Cant found the twine for the third time this season off Kostov's first collegiate assist at the 11:12 mark. The junior then feed the ball to Ouska and he one timed it ahead to Kostov, who scored his second goal of the year for the game-winner at 45:37. The helper was Ouska's first career point.

The Pioneers cut the deficit in half when Anzevui served the ball to Backman, who headed the ball into the netting at the 49:11 mark, but Sacred Heart could get no closer the rest of the way.

After the Pioneers trimmed the margin to one score, they had several scoring chances in the final 40 minutes. Ricarti Mendes' (Campinas, Brazil) shot was stopped by Murphy in the 61st minute and Murphy turned away Gustavo Netto's (Sao Paolo, Brazil) ball two minutes later. Jesper Fredriksson (Gothenburg, Sweden) handed Sacred Heart its final scoring threat in the 72nd minute, but Murphy was there to stop the shot and preserve the victory for Mount St. Mary's.

The Pioneers wrap up the regular season Sunday when they visit Monmouth at 1:00 pm.
