WEST POINT, NY - The Sacred Heart men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2013 portion of their indoor schedule over the weekend competing at the Carleton Crowell Invitational hosted by Army.

In the men's heptathlon, senior Scott Polis (East Patchogue, NY) finished second with a total of 4,390 points.  Polis tied for first in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.40 meters.  He was second in the shot put (11.32m) and third in the 60m hurdles (9.00). 

R-junior Marc Troiani (Valhalla, NY) was fourth in the shot put and fifth in the weight throw.  Troiani had a throw of 14.84 meters in the shot and a heave of 16.05 meters in the weight event.  Senior Matt Wagner (Brookhaven, NY) was sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 15.70 meters.

The Pioneers dominated in the 5,000 meters, placing seven runners in the top-10 finishers.  Junior Brianna Castrogivanni (Commack, NY) and senior Alyssa Selmquist (Northford, CT) led the field, finishing first and second.  Castrogivanni ran in 17:14.54 while Selmquist clocked in at 17:20.72.

Senior Megan Papp (Niantic, CT), sophomore Elizabeth Hutchins (Pawcatuck, CT) and senior Michelle Navarro (Piscataway, NJ) finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.  Papp finished in a time of 18:10.28, Hutchins in 18:31.33 and Navarro in 18:33.11.  Junior Teresa Gagliostro (Township of Washington, NJ) and freshman Alexandra Kaeslin (Bethel, CT) were ninth and 10th in 19:41.01 and 19:46.71.

In the field events, junior Lindsay Aponte (West Islip, NY) won the shot put with a throw of 13.05 meters.  Freshman Adaora Nwodili (Coram, NY) was fifth with a toss of 12.10 meters.

In the 60 meter dash, SHU finished in four of the top-seven slots led by sophomore Ashia Wright (Cheshire, CT) who placed second.  Wright was just off the winning time of 7.84 seconds by Saint Peter's Jamelia Johnson, posting a time of 7.87 seconds.  Wright also had a solid showing in the 200 meters, clocking in at 26.44 seconds for a fifth place finish.

Junior Seanne Denny (Randolph, MA) was fourth in the 60 meters in 8.01 seconds followed by freshman Angela Harrison (North Haledon, NJ) in 8.05 seconds.  Senior Julianne Cappadona (North Attleboro, MA) finished seventh with a time of 8.12 seconds.

Senior Nicholas Arena (Brewster, NY) placed fifth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:40.59.  In the 3,000 meters, freshman Sean Ferguson (Smithtown, NY) finished fifth in 8:43.96. In the men's 5,000 meters, senior Justin Britton (Bayshore, NY) was seventh with a time of 16:23.31.

Junior Katelyn Racanelli (Riverside, CT) took fifth in the 500 meters, clocking in at 1:21.25.  In the long jump, sophomore Dylan Baker (Petersham, MA) was fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.14 meters and junior Joselyn Henry (Westport, CT) was eighth at 5.09 meters.  Baker was ninth in the triple jump with a leap of 9.99 meters.

In the pole vault, freshman Sara Isaacson (Aberdeen, NJ) was sixth clearing a height of 3.10 meters and sophomore Sarah Wallis (Forked River, NJ) was eighth with a height of 2.95 meters.  On the men's side, freshman John Varsam (Flushing, NY) was sixth with a height of 3.90 meters.

Both teams will compete at the 31st annual Yale Intercollegiate Track Classic on Saturday at Yale's Coxe Cage.
