The Sacred Heart University indoor track and field teams had a pair of rookies honored for their efforts at the Giegengack Invitational. Cameron Croce was named the Northeast Conference Men's Field Athlete and Rookie of the Week, while Tara Brody was named the Women's Rookie of the Week.
Croce continued his impressive indoor season with three throws that surpassed his personal-best prior to Saturday's competition. Croce threw 17.04 and 17.07, to record personal-bests in the opening rounds of the weight throw. His final throw was 17.18m, easily surpassing the IC4A qualifying standard (17.00m) and moving to third all-time in SHU program history in the event. Croce's mark is the top throw for a Pioneers first-year student-athlete.
Brody competed in the 60-meter dash for the first time in her career on Saturday and the results put her in the scoring conversation for the upcoming NEC Indoor Championships. First, Brody won her trial heat in 8.04 seconds. Then the rookie placed third in the dash final with a clocking of 7.89 seconds. This performance moved her into 10th on the NEC performance list, and was also an automatic qualifying time for the New England Championships.
The Pioneers are in action, Friday and Saturday, at the NEC Indoor Track and Field Championship. The event is hosted at Ocean Breeze Track and Field Center in Staten Island N.Y.
