Turner Gold Highlights First Day Of NEC Championship

The first-day of the Northeast Conference indoor track and field championship for Sacred Heart University was highlighted by a gold medal in the shot put. 

Christian Turner won the shot put, with a throw of 16.51m. He led the competition from the first throw and he is the only competitor to surpass 16.0m 

The men's team is in sixth-place with 12 points. The competition concludes Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.

Shot Put

  • Turner captured his gold with his throw of 16.51 in the fourth round
  • His third round throw of 15.90 was the second-best throw of the championship, as het the runner-up reached 15.68 on his final attempt

Long Jump

  • Sean Mefford used a 6.67m jump in the fourth round to earn seventh place

60m Hurdles

  • Jeffrey Young is the fifth qualifier, after running 8.45 in his heat on Friday

60m Dash

  • Michael Somoza was the fasted Pioneer with a run of 7.143, the 17thfastest time
  • Devon Heyward-Guerrier ran 7.40, 21st fastest and Nicholas DeRosa was 24that 7.44
