PRINCETON, N.J. (March 7, 2014)—Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) led all players with 13 kills as the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team fell to Princeton 3-1 Friday night. The loss drops the Pioneers to 7-11 on the season and 2-5 in EIVA play.
The teams traded points to open the match before a three-point Brad Borsay (Richmond, R.I.) service run gave Sacred Heart a slight 6-3 lead. The Tigers rallied back to take the lead on Jeff Stapleton's three aces. But a 7-2 run put SHU back on top where they remained until the end claiming the set 25-22.
Both teams battled hard for control of the second set but two four-point runs late in the game gave Princeton the boost it needed to tie the match with a 25-17 win.
Sacred Heart spent most of the third set behind, but back and forth action in the middle allowed for a comeback as the Pioneers took six consecutive points for a 20-17 lead. A kill from Princeton's Pat Schwagler ended the streak and sparked an eight-point Tiger run that brought them to the 25-20 finish line.
The Pioneers led for the majority of the fourth set and a Princeton service error moved them to just two points from a win, 23-20. But Sacred Heart followed with a service error of its own allowing the Tigers to get back in the game with a four-point run that put them in the lead 24-23. Consecutive kills from Mackenzie and Jason Kinney (Salem, N.H.) gave SHU a 25-24 lead and forced extra points. But a Tiger kill and SHU attack error combined to give Princeton the set.
Sacred Heart is back in action tomorrow at George Mason.
