Volleyball Falls 3-1 To Harvard In EIVA Opener

The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to EIVA foe Harvard University Thursday evening at the Pitt Center. The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in league play while the Crimson improve to 1-4 on the year and 1-0 in EIVA action.

Emerson Waumans led the Pioneers with 13 kills and hit .229 on the night. Shawn Tischler also reached double figures with 10 kills, while Blake Cox recorded 10 digs.

The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, January 30, when they host Kean at the Pitt Center.

First Set: SHU 25, Harvard 19

  • The Pioneers jumped out to an 11-5 lead, with a Waumans ace highlighting early action
  • After a service ace from Marty Heavey made the score 15-10, Pioneers, SHU went on a 4-0 run that opened a 19-10 advantage
  • Harvard scored three straight and would get as close as five, 24-19, before a Ryan Hong error gave SHU the opening set

Second Set: Harvard 25, SHU 16

  • The Crimson scored the first two points of the set and never trailed
  • Consecutive SHU hitting errors gave Harvard a 10-4 edge
  • A Tischler kill, was followed by a Chatterton ace to get the Pioneers back within four, 10-6
  • SHU closed to within three points, 13-10, on blocks from Jakob Karlsson and Waumans
  • A service error by Adam Gordon brought the Pioneers within three a few points later, 15-12
  • The Crimson scored four straight and 10 of 14 points to even the match

Third Set: Harvard 25, SHU 21

  • Matthew Ctvrtlik opened with a kill, before the Pioneers scored twice with kill from Tischler and Waumans
  • A big kill from Bloomquist put SHU back in front 5-4 and the first of back-to-back points to give the Pioneers a 6-4 lead
  • Harvard answered with consecutive points, before a kill from Waumans gave SHU its lead back momentarily
  • Blocks by Dow and Schoenfeld made the run 3-0 and gave the Crimson an 10-8 advantage
  • A service error ended the run, and brought SHU within two, 11-9
  • Harvard answered with two kills and forced a Pioneer timeout with the score 13-9
  • A Pioneer hitting error and a Schoenfeld ace gave Harvard a 15-9 edge
  • Ricchetti and Bloomquist had a block on the next point and then a Cox dig landed just in to cut the deficit to 15-11
  • A Waumans kill made the score 16-12 and a Karlsson block closed SHU within three, 16-13, before three straight Harvard points
  • Waumans kills sandwiched a Harvard point as SHU scored three of the next four points to close within 20-16
  • After trading kills to 22-19, a Harvard setting error gave SHU the serve and McLaughlin served an ace on the next ball, making it 22-20 and forcing a Harvard timeout
  • Out of the break McLaughlin's first serve just missed wide
  • Tischler recorded a kill on the next point but a Ricchetti serve into the net gave Harvard set point, and a SHU setting error ended the set

Fourth Set: Harvard 25, SHU 23

  • A long rally ended for the first point ended with a Harvard block as the Crimson opened a 5-0 lead
  • Bloomquist hit a ball off of a block for the Pioneers first point
  • After trading points Karlsson and Chatterton both recorded kills brought the Pioneers within 6-4
  • Dow ended the Pioneer run and started a 3-0 Harvard run to build the advantage back to 9-4
  • A Harvard service error halted the run at four, and made the score 10-5 Crimson
  • Harvard responded with consecutive points, including an ace from Ctvrtlik, to open a 12-5 lead 
  • The Crimson would push the lead to eight, 15-7, before Tischler and Bloomquist kills moved SHU within six, 15-9
  • Harvard built the lead back to seven, 23-16, before a SHU rally 
  • A Harvard service error began a Pioneer rally that saw blocks from Bloomquist and Waumans to make it 23-19 
  • A solo block by Karlsson brought SHU within a pair, 24-22, and forced a timeout
  • A Pioneer ball handling error on the Crimson's fifth match set ended the Pioneers run

  • SHU finished with 16 blocks in the match, with six from Chatterton
  • The Pioneers hit .250 in the opening set and finished the match at .151
  • Ricchetti handed out 28 of the Pioneers 38 assists
