Men's Volleyball Falls to Penn St. in Straight Sets on the Road

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Penn State Friday evening on the road. The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in the EIVA, while the Nittany Lions improve to 6-0 on the year and 3-0 in conference play.

Emerson Waumans led the Pioneers with a game-high 13 kils. Noah Richetti led SHU with a game-high 21 assists, while Blake Cox recorded a game-high 10 digs in the loss.

The Pioneers return to action on Friday, Feb. 22, when they play host to NJIT in an EIVA matchup at 7 p.m.

First Set: Penn St. 25, SHU 22

  • SHU jumped out to an early 5-2 lead before Penn St. battled back to tie the contest at 9-9

  • The teams traded points to an 18-18 tie

  • SHU was able to pull ahead for a 20-19 lead after a kill from Tom Wisniewski

  • Penn St. responded by closing the set with a 6-2 run to secure the 25-22 score

Second Set: Penn St. 25, SHU 21

  • The Nittany Lions jumped out to a 15-10 lead

  • SHU was able to tie the set at 18-18

  • However, Penn St. closed the set with a 7-3 run to secure the 25-21 set win

Third Set: Penn St. 25, SHU 23

  • The teams played to a 6-6 tie early in the set

  • The two sides traded points unil Penn St. was able to pull ahead to a 20-16 lead

  • The Pioneers came back to tie it at 23-23 before the Nittany Lions recorded two straight points to secure the win

  • SHU finished with two blocks in the match, with Taylor Bloomquist and Waumans recording one apiece

  • The Pioneers hit .159 for the match
