Men's Volleyball Falls to Penn State in Straight Sets

FAIRFIELD, CONN. - The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team fell to EIVA-foe Penn State, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at home. The loss drops the Pioneers to 3-12 overall and 1-8 in the EIVA, while Penn State improves to 12-12 on the year and 8-2 in the EIVA.

Emerson Waumans led SHU with eight kills, while Ramiro Balaguer led the Pioneers with 15 assists.

The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, Mar. 31, when the Pioneers play host to St. Francis U. at 3 p.m.

First Set: PSU 25, SHU 19

  • Penn State jumped out to an early 4-2 lead

  • After SHU cut the deficit to 6-5, the Nittany Lions went on a 13-6 run to push its lead to 19-11

  • SHU battled with a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to 20-15

  • The Nittany Lions closed the set outscoring SHU 5-4 to take the first set 25-19

Second Set: PSU 25, SHU 15

  • Penn State jumped out to a 6-1 lead

  • SHU cut the deficit to 7-4 before Penn State built its lead to 14-9, forcing a timeout by SHU

  • The Pioneers cut the deficit to 17-12, but the Pioneers were outscored 8-3 to take the second set 25-15

Third Set: PSU 25, SHU 20

  • Penn State jumped out to a 4-1 lead before SHU tied the set at 5-5

  • The Nittany Lions went on a 7-3 run to take a 12-8 lead

  • After SHU cut the deficit to 14-13, the Nittany Lions pushed its lead to 17-13

  • The Nittany Lions held on for the 25-20 set win
