Emmitsburg, MD – Kiley Evans (Cazenovia, NY) dropped in a season high 17 points as the SHU women's basketball team came away with a 55-46 road win over Mount St. Mary's Monday night. Callan Taylor (Overland Park, KS) posted her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Pioneers snapped a two game losing skid overall and have now won seven straight against the Mount.
Mount St. Mary's (4-15, 1-7 NEC) got off to a hot start and jumped on the Pioneers early with an 8-0 spurt after the opening whistle. Tara Lonergan got the first bucket off the game on baseline jumper while Sandra Andresson's layup capped off the Mountaineer run. Maggie Cosgrove (Andover, MA) tallied the first SHU points of the night on a jumper 5:09 into the first half. Selina Mann knocked in a pair of free throws for two of her team high 14 points of the game to give the Mount a 16-8 advantage.
Sacred Heart (11-8, 5-3 NEC) found its stride and took control by rattling off the next 13 points. Kiley Evans (Cazenovia, NY) scored five straight for the Pioneers, including a trey from the left wing to make it a 16-13 affair. Two possessions later Evans buried another three-pointer to give Sacred Heart its first lead at 18-16. Taylor broke onto the scoreboard on SHU's next trip up the floor, ending the Pioneer run with old fashioned three-point play.
Evans put Sacred Heart on top 28-20 with a layup in traffic to draw a foul and knocked in the ensuing free throw. Mount St. Mary's closed the gap to three before halftime with five straight points, the last three coming on a Jessie Kaufman long ball with 30 seconds left in the period.
The Pioneers shot 50 percent (12-24) in the opening half but were forced into 13 turnovers compared to ten for the Mount. Taylor ended the first period halfway to a double-double and threatening a triple-double with five points and five rebounds while also tallying four assists. Mount St. Mary's went 35 percent (9-26) in the first twenty minutes as Mann finished the first half with a team high eight points.
Cosgrove sunk a shot from beyond the arc on the first possession of the second half to put SHU ahead 31-25. Ericka Norman (Chino Hills, CA) created a pair of fast breaks for SHU, scoring once herself and setting up Morgan Merriman (Seattle, WA) for an easy lay-in on the second. Merriman's finished the night with eight points and five rebounds in 32 minutes off the bench.
Mount senior Mary Dunn kept her team close with back-to-back layups to trim the Pioneer advantage to 42-36 with just under ten minutes remaining. Cosgrove answered for SHU with another trey to extend the lead back to nine at 45-36. Norman supplied one of her four assists of the game to Evans as the duo combined to give Sacred Heart its first double digit cushion, 49-39. The Pioneers would hold the Mount to only one field goal in the final four minutes as Sacred Heart closed out the 55-46 triumph.
Sacred Heart finished the game 45 percent (21-47) from the floor, including 56 percent (5-9) from beyond the arc to overcome 27 turnovers in the win. Mount St. Mary's committed 20 miscues on their end and posted just a 30 percent (15-50) shooting clip.
The Pioneers return to action this Saturday in a 1:00 pm meeting in the William H. Pitt Center against Saint Francis (PA).
