  • Women’s Basketball’s Season Ends in WNIT First Round Loss at Georgetown

    The Sacred Heart women’s basketball team saw their 2018-19 season come to an end on Friday night as the Pioneers fell to Georgetown, 90-59, from the McDonough Arena in the WNIT First Round. The Pioneers conclude the season with a 19-13 record, NEC Semifinal appearance and fourth WNIT trip in the last seven seasons. Georgetown advances to the WNIT Second Round while improving to 17-15 in 2018-19.

    A great 2018-19 season came to an unfortunate end for the Sacred Heart women’s basketball team on Thursday night as the No. 2 seed Pioneers fell in the NEC Semifinals, 68-60, to the No. 4 seed Saint Francis U from the Pitt Center in a game televised on ESPN3. A difficult end to a successful campaign, the Pioneers conclude the season with a 19-12 overall mark while the defending NEC Champion Red Flash advance to their 18th NEC title game in program history.

    Peaking at just the right time of the season, the Sacred Heart women’s basketball team head into the NEC Semifinals as the hottest team in the league having just toppled Wagner at home in the Quarterfinal round on Monday. Winners of six straight and nine of their last 10, SHU wrapped up the 2018-19 regular season with an overall mark of 18-11 and 14-4 in the NEC. A dominant 18-2 second quarter led the way to the Quarterfinal win over the Seahawks and now the Pioneers shift their focus to the Semifinal round where they play host to the No. 4 seed Saint Francis U (15-16, 11-7 NEC) on Thursday night with tip-off set for 6 PM. The game can be seen on ESPN3 and NEC Front Row.

This announcement marks the most players from a single-team earn All-Conference honors in the same season. The only other time in league history that a team saw four players named All-NEC was Fairleigh Dickinson in 2014-15.

    A lockdown defensive second quarter that saw the Sacred Heart women’s basketball team outscore Wagner 18-2 led the way to a 68-51 NEC Quarterfinal win for the second-seeded Pioneers over the seventh-seed Seahawks. The Pioneers win their sixth straight game and advance to the NEC Semifinal round for the fourth straight season on Thursday at 6 PM. SHU’s opponent is the reigning NEC Champion Saint Francis U, whom the Pioneers just defeated at home, 77-51, on March 2nd.

The Knights drop to 6-20 overall and 3-12 in NEC play.

    After getting back in the win column, thanks to a 27-point drubbing of CCSU on Saturday, the Sacred Heart women’s basketball team completes their season-long four-game road swing on Monday night with a showdown at Fairleigh Dickinson. Tip-off is set for 7 PM in a game that can be seen on ESPN+. The Pioneers are looking for the season series sweep over the Knights for the first time since 2015-16. The two sides met once already this season back on February 11 when the Pioneers toppled FDU by a score of 68-62. Four Pioneers notched double digit point totals, led by 19 from Candice Leatherwood while Katherine Haines posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

    NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University Women's Basketball team earned its fourth win in five games, as the Pioneers defeated NEC-foe Central Connecticut 73-46 on the road Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers return to action Monday, Feb. 25 when SHU travels to take on Fairleigh Dickinson on the road on ESPN+. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m The Pioneers had four players score in double-figures, with graduate student Katherine Haines leading the Pioneers with 24 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks for her 11th double-double of the season. Candice Leatherwood added 13 points, while Erin Storck and Allyson Murphy chipped in 11 points apiece in the win.

    Sacred Heart women’s basketball graduate student Erin Storck was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 1 Women’s Basketball First Team, as announced by the organization on Thursday, February 21, 2018. Storck wins her first career CoSIDA Academic All-District honor and becomes the first player in program history to earn the distinctive academic honor. The announcement makes Storck immediately eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, which will be voted on by the CoSIDA membership and announced in March.

Owning a 58-40 advantage in the fourth quarter, FDU staged a 19-4 run to cut the gap to just three with 1:52 remaining but a pair of timely buckets from Candice Leatherwood and Katherine Haines helped ice the game away late for the Pioneers.
