STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Basketball team earned its third Northeast Conference victory of the season with a 80-68 victory over Wagner this afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 7-7 overall and 3-0 in NEC play. The Pioneers will return to action on Monday, January 14 when the Pioneers host Bryant. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
Graduate student Katherine Haines led the Pioneers with 22 points and tallied 13 boards to earn her fifth double-double of the season. Redshirt senior Candice Leatherwood was right behind with 20 points going 15-17 from the free throw line. She tallied her 500th career point at Sacred Heart in the opening minutes of the first. Sophomore Olivia Dabney tallied a career high 13 points going 3-6 from the field and 3-4 from beyond the arc. The Pioneers set a team high 90.3% shooting from the free throw line going 28-31 from the line.
First Quarter
- The Pioneers would shoot 4-13 from the field while going 2-5 beyond the arc.
- Redshirt senior Candice Leatherwood would lead the way in the first period as she tallied seven points going 1-2 from the field and 1-1 from three point land.
- Her first point of the game that she scored off a free throw would be her 500th career point at SHU.
- The Pioneer defense was strong as well holding the Seahawks to shooting 5-20 from the field and just 2-6 from beyond the arc.
Second Quarter
- In the second quarter the Pioneers would go 5-15 from the field while going 2-6 from beyond the arc.
- In the final 1:33 of the quarter the Pioneers would go on a 7-0 run to take back the lead and to close the half with a 30-28 lead.
- A three by sophomore Olivia Dabney and layups by graduate student Katherine Haines would contribute to the 7-0 run.
- On the defensive front the Pioneers would hold Wagner to shooting 7-13 from the field and just 1-3 from beyond the arc.
- At the end of the first half, sophomore Adrianne Hagood and redshirt senior Candice Leatherwood would lead the for the Pioneers with seven points while Dabney was right behind with six.
- The Pioneers would also tally six steals in the opening half which helped contribute to the impressive comeback.
Third Quarter
- In the third quarter the Pioneers would go 7-11 from the field and 1-2 from beyond the arc.
- Graduate student Katherine Haines would tally six points in the third quarter as she upped her shooting from the field from 1-6 from the field to 5-10.
- The Pioneers would hold the Seahawks to shooting just 6-14 from the field and 1-1 from three point land.
Fourth Quarter
- The Pioneers would rack up 27 points in the fourth quarter as they went 6-15 from the field and 3-6 from beyond the arc.
- While Wagner had an impressive 10-13 from the field the Pioneers were still able to walk away with the 80-66 victory.
- Graduate student Katherine Haines would tally 12 points in the fourth as she finished her day shooting 7-15 from the field, 7-8 from the free throw line and tallied 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
- Sophomore Olivia Dabney would finish her day scoring a career high 13 points shooting 3-6 from the field and 3-4 from beyond the arc.
- Redshirt senior Candice Leatherwood would tally 10 points in the fourth quarter to make her overall total 20 on the day.
