Millsboro, DE - The Sacred Heart bowling team had a tough weekend at the UMES Hawk Classic in a field that included ten nationally ranked teams.  The Pioneers posted a 4-9 record thorugh the three day event and were led by Marissa Gagliardi (North Branford, CT) and Savannah Zientara (Lewiston, NY).  Sacred Heart, currently ranked #9 in the nation, now has a 13-20 record in 2009-10.

The Pioneers went 2-3 Friday afternoon in the opening day of the Hawk Classic.  SHU earned an 842-727 over Bowie before dropping back-to-back tilts to UMES (821-889) and New Jersey City (854-861) to start the day.  Sacred Heart would rebound rolling over Cheney 863-458.  However, the SHU day would end on a down note as the Pioneers lost a tough one to Valaparaiso 757-806.  Gagliardi led the team in baker frame average at 18.3

Sacred Heart stumbled to a 1-4 mark on the second day of the tournament as SHU opened with a 801-867 loss to NEC rival Kutztown.  The Pioneers would run into a buzzsaw in the second game as Vanderbilt cruised to a 1057-799 victory.  Sacred Heart would use Gagliardi's 224 in game three to earn their only win of the day, 908-920 over Hampton.  The day end would end with two more defeats at the hands of St. Francis (NY) and Arkansas State.  Zientara led SHU on day two with a 188.4 average while filling 84% of her frames and shooting 79% on her spares.

Day three included a best of seven baker game format as the Pioneers rounded out the tournament 1-2 on the final day.  Sacred Heart started the afternoon with a 4.5-1.5 victory over Morgan State (172-181, 195-188, 242-155, 203-160, 191-191, 210-198).  The Pioneers averaged over 200 for this block, something only three teams did all weekend.  Southern University overcame a 2-1 SHU lead to defeat the Pioneers in six games (181-170, 134-163, 151-148, 178-203, 155-200, 172-191).  The tournament would end for Sacred Heart in a rematch with Morgan State which the Pioneers fell 4-1 (178-184, 184-168, 148-181, 179-188, 157-158).  Freshman Jacqueline Willy (Clarance, NY) led the team in baker frame average on day three with 19.1.
