Women's Fencing Finishes Second At NEIFC Championships

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.— The Sacred Heart University women's fencing team placed second in the final team standings at the 2018 NEIFC Championships at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday.

Freshman Daria Rudakova was the lone Pioneer medalist, earning the bronze in the epee event. Rudakova reached the semifinals, missing the finals by one touch with a 15-14 decision to Rose Hulsey-Vincent of Vassar. Samantha Abbott and Ashley Cherry finished fifth and seventh respectively in the epee event.

Hasoni Austin led SHU with a fifth-place finish in the Saber event and Bailey Partridge earned a sixth-place finish in the foil.

In the final team standings, the Pioneers recorded 76 victories out of 112 bouts. MIT earned the first-place finish after winning 93 of the 112 bouts.

SHU's saber squad finished third in the squad competition, falling in the three-way tiebreaker to MIT and Wellesley College. The epee squad finished second to MIT with 30 victories in 38 bouts. The Foil squad finished eighth among the 14 NEIFC schools.

The Pioneers will compete next at the NCAA Regional at Brandeis University on Sunday, March 11.
