Field Hockey Outlasted by Villanova, 3-2

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. - The Sacred Heart University field hockey team fell to Villanova on the road, 3-2, on Villanova Field Hock Sunday afternoon. Bridget LaRiccia and Makenna Crawford tallied a goal apiece in the loss.

The Pioneers fell to 0-2 on the season with the loss, while the Wildcats open the season at 1-0 with the win. SHU will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 6 when the Pioneers take on Saint Francis U in the home-opener on Johnson Field in New Haven at 2 p.m.

The Scoring

First Quarter 

  • (12:25): Kelsy Hopkins sent a pass to Bridget LaRiccia in the offensive circle, LaRiccia pushed the ball past the keeper to give SHU a 1-0 lead

Second Quarter

  • (20:36): Megan Vermeil shuffled the ball to Emma McLaughlin, who poked it to the back of the net to tie the contest at 2-2

Fourth Quarter

  • (46:30): Riley Dolan sent the ball to Lydia Sydor for the one-timer to put Villanova up 2-1

  • (52:04): LaRiccia took a shot on goal and Makenna Crawford redirected the shot into the net to tie the contest at 2-2

  • (59:46): Vermeil carried the ball into the circle and shot it past the keeper to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead


  • The Pioneers were outshot 25-12

  • SHU registered four shots on goal compared to Villanova's 12

  • Hailey Power made nine saves in the loss

  • Bridget LaRiccia recoded a goal and an assist in the loss
