Nighbor's NEC Player of the Year Honor Highlights SHU Women's Golf Postseason Accolades

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The 2017 Northeast Conference Champion Sacred Heart women's golf team was well represented with postseason honors announced by the Northeast Conference on Wednesday. Ellen Nighbor earned her second consecutive NEC Player of the Year award. Nighbor & sophomore Chelsea Sedlar repeated as All-NEC First Team selections and junior Abigail Hood earned All-NEC second team honors. Head Coach Matt McGreevy earned his second straight NEC Coach of the Year award. 

Nighbor had a sensational senior campaign as she garnered NEC Player of the Year for the second straight season. She claimed the NEC Individual Title on a playoff hole against teammate Chelsea Sedlar at the Northeast Conference Championship. Nighbor also picked up individual wins at the Navy Fall Classic, SHU Fall Classic and Lonnie Barton Invitational. In total, she picked up nine top-10 finishes and seven top-three finishes on the season with a 75.4 round average. Nighbor recorded four under-par rounds this season including two rounds of 71 at the NEC Championships.  She also earned her third straight All-NEC First Team selection.

Sedlar also earned her second straight All-NEC First Team selection, picking up five top-10 finishes in her sophomore campaign. She finished in the top two in both the Quinnipiac Classic and the SHU Fall Classic and posted an average round score of 77. Sedlar recorded a SHU women's golf record single round of 70 on the final day of the NEC Championship to push it to a playoff.

Hood earned her second All-NEC honor. She picked up her first All-NEC honor in her rookie campaign with the Pioneers. She picked six top-10 finishes and four top-five finishes this season with a 79.0 average round. She finished in fourth at the Seahawk Invitational and the NEC Championship this spring. She also recorded a program record single-round of 70 on the final day of the NEC Championship. 

Head Coach Matt McGreevy was named Northeast Conference Women's Golf Coach of the Year for the second straight season after leading the Pioneers to five team tournaments wins in the 2016-17 season and the program's first NEC Championship. This is his second NEC Championship after winning with the men's team back in 2011. McGreevy has earned three Coach of the Year honors at the helm of the Pioneers' golf program. 

The Pioneers teed off the third and final round of the 2017 NCAA Women's Golf Regional at the Rawl Course in Lubbock, Texas earlier today.
