Pioneers Throttle New England, 6-1

Bridgeport, CT – The Sacred Heart women's hockey team struck early and often to crush the University of New England, 6-1, Friday night at the Wonderland of Ice. The Pioneers (15-11-1) have now won four in a row.

The Pioneers started the game in impressive fashion, dominating the action on both sides in the first period. SHU was able to put 23 shots on New England's goalie Courtney Kendall, sliding three past her in the first frame. Sophomore Alanna Woodford (Scituate, MA) got the scoring started for the Pioneers at 6:21 of the first, able to knock one past Kendall after a furious attack by the Pioneers, with assists being credited to sophomore Cara Curran (Westfield, MA) and sophomore Briana Connolly (Duxbury, MA). Connolly and Curran combined again for the second goal at 18:28 of the second, this time Connolly knocking one past Kendall. Just 29 seconds later freshman Megan Ofner (Hamilton, NJ) got in on the action, putting the Pioneers up 3-0 at 18:57. Junior Sara Hanna (Lino Lakes, MN) helped out on the play. 

The Pioneers came out with great energy again in the second period, adding two more goals on the Nor'easters. Senior Jennifer Hasson (Quakertown, PA) scored the Pioneers' fourth goal of the night 5:09 of the second, assisted by sophomore Whitney Henderson (Elkins Parks, PA) and junior Jennie Robinson (Hyde Park, NY). Senior Sarah Delaney (Whittman, MA) scored the next one for the Pioneers at 10:08 of the second, a 5 on 3 on goal, assists by sophomore Natasha Klinoff (Concord, MA) and sophomore Alex Davis (Pembroke, MA). 

The Pioneers and the Nor'easters exchanged goals in the third period, to make the final score 6-1. Freshman Jenna Poulin had an unassisted strike to cut into the Pioneers' lead at 2:27. The Pioneers put their final goal in at 4:12 of the third, a goal by Connolly, assisted by Woodford.

The Pioneers and Nor'easters are back it tomorrow afternoon for Sacred Heart's Senior Day.
