WORCESTER, Mass. – Amanda Fontaine registered 46 saves, as the Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team was shutout by Holy Cross 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.
SHU (0-2) and the Crusaders battled to a scoreless draw throughout most of the first period until Lauren Abbenante put Holy Cross ahead with just under three minutes left before the first intermission. Taylor Moreland would attempt to equalize for the Pioneers shortly before the period ended but had two consecutive shots saved by Krista Manzanares.
Holy Cross (2-0) would then use a dominant second period to cushion their advantage as they outshot Sacred Heart 22-2 in the frame. Fontaine managed to keep the game at 1-0 for just over 13 minutes before the Crusaders finally got one by her. Nicole Gianinnino provided the first goal and then Izzy Bagi added a power play score moments later to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Crusaders would add two more in the third to complete the scoring. For the game, they outshout the Pioneers 51-8. Holy Cross was 2-5 on the power play, while Sacred Heart went 0-4.
SHU's next game will be its first ever at its new home, the Sports Center of Connecticut, as they host SUNY Canton on Friday, November 14 at 7 pm.
