SHELTON, Conn. – Junior forward Heather Daley scored her fourth goal of the season Saturday as the Sacred Heart women's hockey team fell to the Trinity Bantams 5-1 at the Sports Center of Connecticut.
Trinity (9-3-1) scored first less than two minutes into the game, as Cheeky Herr slipped an Alessandra Bravi pass past Amanda Fontaine to give the Bantams a 1-0 lead. Twenty-two seconds later, Lauren Fitzgerald gave Trinity a 2-0 lead 2:14 into the game with assists from Shannon Farrell and Kelci Finn. The Bantams added a third goal in the period at 7:15 when Emily Riccio smacked home an Emma Tani feed to make the score 3-0. Sacred Heart (5-11-1) had seven shots on goal in the first period, but didn't get one past Trinity goaltender Claudia Escue.
The Bantams made the score 4-0 at 9:32 of the second period. Trinity capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play, as Herr capped off some tic-tac-toe passing from Tani and Hannah Oganeku for her second goal of the game. The Pioneers got on the scoreboard with 5:00 remaining in the second period, also on the power play. Daley crashed the net to knock in the rebound of a Taylor Moreland shot to put the score at 4-1. Megan Ofner also assisted on the tally. Trinity tacked on one more goal in the third period to make the final score 5-1.
Trinity outshot Sacred Heart 36-18. The Pioneers were 1-for-3 on the power play, as the Bantams went 1-for-4. Escue made 17 saves for Trinity as Nicole Magee made 29 saves in relief of Fontaine.
Sacred Heart hosts Stevenson for a weekend series beginning Friday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.
