Third Period Comeback Lands Pioneers A 4-4 Tie With Saint Anselm

SHELTON, Conn.-The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team rallied from a two goal deficient to eventually end the game in a tie 4-4 against Saint Anselm as the team sent the game into overtime. The team will aim to take the series tomorrow afternoon as the team faces off against the Hawks at 4:00 p.m. 

Saint Anselm would strike first as the Hawks scored a goal at 13:38 as Kaley Campbell scored a goal off an assist by Katy Meehan and Amanda Nylander. SHU would attempt to answer back in the first period as the team fired off a total of 11 shots in the first period but would be unable to find the net sending the game into the second with the Hawks ahead 1-0. 

Then in the second period Saint Anselm would continue where they left off in the first as Campbell again would find the back of the net to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead just :48 seconds into the second period. The goal would be assisted by Madison Sprague and Gabby Monaco. Then just two minutes later the Pioneers would get on the board as Samantha Shoebottom would fire off a shot into the back of the net at 3:22 to put the Pioneers down only one goal at the end of the second period. 

Goals would start to fly in the final period of regulation as Saint Anslem would rip two goals first at 4:36 courtesy of Megan Klaus off assists by Amanda Conger and Caley Mueller then the second goal coming at 11:04 while Saint Anselm was on the power play courtesy of Amanda Conger to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead. But SHU would battle back as Maddie Bishop would receive a pass by Katie Stuve at 15:20 as Bishop would find the back of the net to cut the Saint Anslem lead to 4-2. Not much later, Victoria Grimmer would launch a goal on the power play to give the Pioneers three goals on the night off an assist by Jayne Lewis at 18:26 to cut the lead to 4-3. Then with just one second remaining in the final period of regulation it would be Bishop again with the miracle shot that found the net to tie the game up at 19:59 to make the final score at the end of regulation 4-4. 

Neither team would be able to score in overtime though which meant the game would end in a tie with the final score being 4-4.
