PAWTUCKET, R.I.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team defeated Johnson and Wales in the first game of the two game series winning by a final score of 2-0. The team will face the Wildcats tomorrow at home with puck-drop scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The Pioneers would score early as freshman Anna Klein would fire a shot passed the goalie at 2:27 while SHU was shorthanded to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. SHU would continue to fire shots the entire first period as they tallied a total of 16 shots while the Pioneer defense held Johnson and Wales to just four. Freshman Kelly Solak led the team in total shots with eight as the Pioneers would head into the second period still ahead by one.
After the Pioneers kicked off the second period launching five shots each either saved or went wide, SHU would go on the powerplay at 4:13. During the SHU powerplay, freshman Cannady Taleghani would slip a goal passed the Wildcats off assists by Klein and Lilly Cleary to put the Pioneers ahead 2-0 at 6:02. Johnson and Wales would not back down though as they would later fire off four straight shots at goalie Sarah Erban but she would make impressive saves to keep the Wildcats from scoring in the second period.
Both sides would play physical defense as neither team would be able to score a goal in the third period. The goalies for both teams had impressive days as Erban tallied a total of 23 saves on 23 shots while Johnson and Wales goalie Jasmine Mucci tallied 36 saves on 38 shots faced. The Pioneers would end up victorious in the defensive battle shutting out the Wildcats by a final score of 2-0.
