SHELTON, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team completed the home at home sweep of Johnson and Wales with a 6-0 shutout over the Wildcats. The team returns to action on Friday, Nov. 2 when the team returns to NEWHA play against Post. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Just twenty-four seconds into the first period the Pioneers would get on the board courtesy of an early goal by Maddie Bishop off an assist by Kelly Solak to give SHU a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later the Pioneers would respond with another goal this time from the stick of freshman Samantha Shoebottom from Lexi Edwards to put the Pioneers ahead 2-0 at 2:43. The Pioneers would score one more in the period while SHU was on the powerplay as Haley Payne would fire a shot passed the goalie off a pair of assists by Katie Stueve and Nicole Guidi at 5:42.
The Pioneers would not stop there as Kennedy Spiering would kick off the second period with an unassisted goal at 2:39 to give the Pioneers a 4-0 lead. Both teams would play tight defense as neither team would be able to score until 13:30 when Stueve would launch a shot passed the goalie off an assist by Lilly Cleary to put the Pioneers ahead 5-0. Elizabeth Furifari would tally her first goal of the season off an assist by Solak to conclude the second period with the score 6-0 in favor of SHU.
Neither team would score in the third period as the Pioneers concluded the sweep of the Wildcats to earn the teams fourth win of the season. The team returns to action on Friday, Nov. 2 when the team returns to NEWHA play against Post. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
