Women's Hockey Heads to Worcester for ECAC Open Tournament

Setting the Scene...  After compiling a 7-16-1 record in the regular season Sacred Heart has been selected as the #3 seed in the ECAC Open Tournament in Worcester this weekend. The tournament opens with the host, Holy Cross, taking on Saint Michael's at noon Saturday, followed by the Pioneers vs. Saint Anselm at 4:00 pm. The winners will play in the title game at 4:00 pm Sunday, preceeded by the consolation game at noon.

About Sacred Heart... Junior forward Lauren Fontaine leads the team in scoring with 31 points, 19 goals and 12 assists. Classmate Brittany Hartman has scored 12 goals and collected 14 assists, with a team-high four power play goals. Senior Kate Dunlop ranks third in scoring with eight goals and 14 assists. Sophomore Nicole Palazzo holds the team lead in assists with 17. In between the pipes for the Pioneers, sophomore Raelene Sydor has stopped 261 shots in 10 starts.


Scouting the Hawks... Saint Anselm concluded the 2009-'10 season with a 14-10-1 record, led by freshman forward Rosemarie Giarrusso who scored 14 goals and notched 14 assists. Junior Sarah Ellins is second on the team in scoring with 11 goals and 13 assists, followed by  senior Maria Dougherty who has nine scores and 12 helpers. Sophomore Amy Zappen has accumulated the majority of minutes in the cage and stopped 420 shots, while owning a 1.87 goals against average.


SHU vs. SAC... In last year's ECAC Open Tournament the Pioneers upended the Hawks 6-3 in the semi-final round. SHU's Gina Arnone led the way with a hat trick, while Hartman contributed three assists. Zappen made 23 saves in net for Saint Anselm.


Last Time Out... Sacred Heart split a weekend exhibition series with Rhode Island a week ago. The Pioneers fell in game one, 9-5, but rebounded to take the second game 7-1. In game two, Hartman netted a hat trick, while Fontaine added three assists and a score of her own. Palazzo lit the lamp twice in each game.


Scouting St. Mike's... Senior Desiree Biron leads the 3-19-1 Purple Knights with 11 goals and six assists. Fellow senior, Crystal Sarna has tallied eight goals and three assists on the season. Junior Alysia Goldman has saved 491 shots in goal and has a 4.04 GAA.


SHU vs. SMC...  The two teams have not met since December 2007. The Pioneers won, at home, 6-0. Hankins, Hartman, and Jackie Galvin each notched a goal for Sacred Heart.


Scouting Holy Cross...  The Crusaders hold the number one seed in the tournament with an 18-4-2 record. Sophomore Stacey Hotchkins has recorded a team-high 41 points, including a team-leading 23 goals and 18 assists. Junior Jocelyn Kratchmer is second in points with 16 goals and 17 assists, totaling 33 points. Senior Lisa Wilson has dished out a team-high 19 assists to go with seven scores. Junior Monique Gallant and sophomore Carly Dominick-Sobol have split time in net with a combined .917 save percentage and 1.61 GAA.


SHU vs. HC...  The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-1 lead against the Crusaders in their opener this season, before ultimately falling 5-3. Sophomore Nicole Garat scored twice for Holy Cross. Last season the Crusaders defeated SHU, 4-2, in the ECAC Open Final. Fontaine netted both goals for the Pioneers.
