SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team wrapped up its regular season Sunday with a 16-5 loss to the Bryant Bulldogs at Bryant Turf Complex. With this result, the Pioneers will face the Bulldogs Friday in the NEC Tournament.
Caitlin Delaney and Alyssa Pearce both had a goal and an assist for the Pioneers. Jenna Liljeberg had a goal and three groundballs. Emily Corrice led the SHU defense with five groundballs and three caused turnovers.
It was a game of runs in the first half. Bryant (12-4, 6-1 NEC) got out to a 2-0 lead with 25:40 remaining on goals by Lauren Descalzo and Nicole Britton. Sacred Heart (8-7, 4-3 NEC) responded with four goals over the next 11:43 to take a 4-2 lead. Delaney scored 10 seconds after the Bulldogs went up 2-0 with Pearce following that up 48 seconds later. Goals by Farhat and Liljeberg gave SHU a 4-2 lead with 13:57 to play in the half. Bryant put the clamps down on the Pioneers for the remainder of the half, scoring seven unanswered goals to take a 9-4 halftime lead. The Bulldogs scored seven more goals in the second half to take a 16-4 lead before Anna Finn scored her first career goal to make the final score 16-5.
Bryant outshot Sacred Heart 36-15 and held a 24-14 advantage in groundballs. The Bulldogs had 13 draw controls to SHU's nine.
Sacred Heart will enter the NEC Women's Lacrosse Championship as the #4 seed and will take on top-seed Bryant on Friday, May 5 at Bryant with the time to be determined.
