SOMERSET, N.J. – Sacred Heart women's lacrosse freshman goalkeeper Shana Hecht was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Hecht earns the distinction following a sensational debut on Friday against New Hampshire as the rookie made 14 saves (eight in the first half alone) while adding a game-high four ground balls and one caused turnover in 60 minutes against the Wildcats.
The 14-save total for Hecht is the highest in program history for a SHU freshman playing in her first career game. In addition, the 14 saves are the most for the Pioneers in a game since recording 14 back on Feb. 25, 2016 (46 games ago).
The weekly honor is particularly momentous for Hecht and the Pioneers as she becomes the first SHU player win a NEC Rookie of the Week award since Averi Farhat back on March 30, 2015. Prior to today, the Pioneers had gone 38 consecutive weekly announcements without a Rookie of the Week winner.
Hecht and the Pioneers are back in action at home against Monmouth from Campus Field on Wednesday at 3 PM.
