Werlau wins her second Rookie of the Week honor in the last three weeks to join classmate goalkeeper Shana Hecht and Mount St. Mary's Jordan Groover as the lone two-time NEC Rookie of the Week award winners in the conference this season.
Werlau wins the honor after leading the SHU offensive attack with 10 points (nine goals, one assist) for the week, including a six-point outburst in Sunday's 15-9 home win over CCSU. She started the week with a four-goal effort on Friday against Bryant, a total that tied for her second-most goals scored in a game this season. The rookie followed that up with a tremendous six-point effort in which she scored five goals and added one assist, two ground balls and one caused turnover to lead SHU to their first NEC win of the season.
Werlau's five goals matched SHU's Division I freshman single-game program record (accomplished five times before Sunday's game) while her six points are the tied for the third-most ever scored by a SHU freshman in the program's Div. I era (since 2000). The last SHU freshman to record more than six points in a single-game was Kelsey Russo, who racked up seven against Wagner back on April 17, 2011.
The Pioneers are back in action on Sunday, April 14th with an NEC away game at LIU Brooklyn with the opening draw set for 11:00 AM.
