Women's Rugby Edged by Queens in Season Opener

HARRISONBURG, Va.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Rugby team was edged by Queens University this afternoon by a final score of 62-35. The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 7 when SHU faces LIU on the road. Kick-off is set for 11:00 a.m.

Queens would take an early 13-0 lead before junior Kaitlin Lagase would find the touch line and after a successful conversion the Pioneers tightened the lead to 13-7. Queens would answer back with a pair of tries to take a 26-7 lead. At the half, Queens would be able to take a 45-7 lead.

But then in the second half, the Pioneers offense would come out firing as junior Isabel Cuddy would make a successful try followed by a good conversion to tighten the Queens lead to 45-14. Cuddy would find the touch line two more times in the game to give her three tries for 15 points on the day.

After Queens took a 57-14 lead, the Pioneers would score three straight tries and conversions to tighten the Royals lead to 57-35. Two tries would be from Cuddy while the third would be by sophomore Nia Williams. Senior Kaylee Hale also had an impressive day on the kicking front going 5-5 in conversions for 10 points. At the final whistle, the Pioneers would just be edged by a final score of 62-35.
