Late Scoring by Bryant Leads to Victory Over SHU 2-1

FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Soccer team (1-9 overall, 0-1 NEC) fell to Bryant (5-4 overall, 1-0 NEC) in a hard fought game by a score of 2-1 to kick off Northeast Conference play. The team returns to action on Friday Sept. 28 when they host Saint Francis (PA). Game-time is set for 12:00 p.m. 

The Pioneers came out flying as Maranda Gibbons took the opening shot for SHU at 5:33 off a corner kick my Melanie DaSilva. At 11:26, the Pioneers struck first as Melanie DaSilva tallied her second goal of the season off an assist by Alex Mesropyan to put SHU ahead 1-0. The Pioneers would dominate the first half of possession and shots 15-4. 

The second half began with the Pioneers firing off two quick shots, the first coming by Melanie DaSilva and the second my Danielle Karpiej but both shots were blocked keeping the Pioneers lead to 1-0 at 48:10.  At 65:54 Bryant tied the game at 1-1 as Corinne Rey's misplayed shot ended up in the net to even the score at one. The goal injected life into Bryant as they responded by firing three consecutive shots in a row.  In the 72ndminute, the Bulldogs took the lead, 2-1, courtesy of a goal scored by Amanda Spitaleria off an assist by Arin Smalls at 75:09. Sacred Heart was unable to find the equalizer in the final 15 minutes and Bryant escaped with the victory in the conference opener. 

Notes: 

First Half

  • The Pioneers would get off to a hot start as Maranda Gibbons to took the opening shot for SHU at 5:33 off a corner kick by Melanie DaSilva
  • At 11:26 Melanie DaSilva would tally her second goal of the season off an assist by Alex Mesropyan to put SHU ahead 1-0.
  • The Pioneers would dominate the first half in shots SHU tallied 15 shots compared to the Bulldogs four. 

Second Half

  • At 65:54 Bryant would be able to tie the game up at 1-1 as Corinne Rey would slip a goal passed the goalie Nicole Sambuco to even the score at one.
  • The Bulldogs would be able to take the lead courtesy of a goal scored by Amanda Spitaleria off an assist by Arin Smalls to give Bryant the 2-1 lead at 75:09.
  • Bryant would edge SHU in shots in the second half 16-7
