NEW HAVEN, CT - The Sacred Heart women's soccer team spotted Western Carolina two first half goals and, despite a Britney Dupee (Portland, ME) goal in the second period, came up just short and lost a 2-1 decision at the Yale Invitational Sunday afternoon.
The Catamounts, 2-4, took a 1-0 lead in just the third minute of the contest on a goal by Kayla Beauduy from Kellie Olberholtzer that beat SHU goalkeeper Meghan Reichelt. Nikki Lombardo gave Western Carolina its 2-0 halftime lead with a tally in the 35th minute off a crossing pass from Bri Cunningham.
Dupee cut the lead in half in the 56th minute when she blasted a shot from 25-yards out into the right corner, beating Catamount keeper Caitlin Williams. Sophomore Alex Mack picked up the assist on the goal. It was the closest the Pioneers would get as the WC defense held SHU to just two shots the rest of the way.
The loss was the sixth straight for the Pioneers to open the season. The team will be in action again on Tuesday night at Yale at 7:00.
