Freshman Lauren Somers (Hudson, N.H.) earned Northeast Conference Swimmer and Rookie of the Week accolades, the conference announced on Tuesday. It marks the first weekly honors of the year for the Pioneer swimming and diving program.
Somers earned the awards after earning three victories in a quad meet Saturday at Iona College. The rookie captured the 50 freestyle in a time of 24.19, the secon-best time in the league to date. In that victory she bested the two-time NEC Swimmer of the year by 0.1 seconds. Somers captured her second individual victory in the 100 freestyle, touching at 52.42. That time was just shy of the school record and is the fastest time in the NEC this season.
An alumna of Alvirne High School, Somers anchored the Pioneers winning 400 freestyle relay team, giving SHU its first-ever victory over the host Gaels. She entered the pool 1.47 seconds behind and posted the fastest split of the day, 51.56, as she pulled ahead and gave SHU a 0.72 second victory.
SHU defeated Iona (112.5-105.5) and league rival St. Francis Brooklyn (155-61) at the Quad Meet, while falling to Wagner (166-74). The Pioneers are 3-1 on the year, 1-1 against NEC opponents, and return to action on Saturday, November 5 when they host Holy Cross at McCann Natatorium in Milford. That meet is scheduled to begin at noon.
