Somers Sweeps NEC Swimming Weekly Awards For Second Time

For the second time in three weeks Sacred Heart University freshman Lauren Somers (Hudson, N.H.) earned Northeast Conference Swimmer and Rookie of the Week accolades. She earns the awards for her performances in the Pioneers first-ever dual meet win over Holy Cross, 179-119, on Saturday.

Somers set four pool records in the dual meet win, three of them as an individual as she swept the sprint freestyle events. Somers touched at 24.50 in the 50 free, 52.67 in the 100 free and 1:54.70 in the 200 free.  The 200 free swim is her best time of the year, and the top time in the NEC this season. Somers led the Pioneers winning 200 freestyle relay team (1:38.95), splitting 24.57 as the squad earned the win and shaved 5.54 seconds off the pool mark.

SHU is 4-1 on the season, equaling the dual meet victory total from last season. The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, when they host Assumption at noon.  The meet will be held McCann Natatorium in Milford.
