Maxwell Wins Swimming & Diving Pentathlon; Pioneers Name Four Captains

The Sacred Heart University swimming and diving team hosted its annual Preseason Pentathlon on Saturday at the McCann Natatorium in Milford, Conn.  Following the event, the Pioneers officially named their team captains. Senior Anna Brown and juniors Jackie Pianese, Jessica Poole, and Renee Russo were voted as team captains by their teammates and coaches.

Fiona Maxwell accumulated 84 points to earn the overall pentathlon crown. She earned the title with a win in the 200 IM, placing second in the 100 butterfuly and third in the 100 breast stroke.  Kim Hylan finished as the runner-up with 73 points and Lauren Spencer placed third with 70 points.

Each individual winner set a SHU pentathlon record in their respective events. Emily Peter won the 100 butterfly, followed by Maxwell and Hylan. Anna Brown earned the win in the 100 backstroke, followed by Hylan and Spencer.  The 100 breaststroke was captured by Jessica Poole, with Julia Pusateri in second place. Lauren Somers captured the freestyle, with Peter and Hylan in second and third place. Maxwell was followed by Poole and Spencer in the individual medley.

The Pioneers open the 2017-18 season on Friday, October 13 at Central Connecticut State.  SHU will compete in a two-day event versus the host Blue Devils and St. Bonaventure.
