Women's Volleyball Falls to Georgetown in Five Sets in Season-Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team fell to Georgetown on the road, 3-2, in the 2019 season-opener on Friday evening. With the loss, SHU opens the season at 0-1, while Georgetown improves to 2-0.

Jillian Kim led the Pioneers with 23 kills and 18 digs, both career-highs for the sophomore. Liisel Neliis tallied 12 kills and 18 digs, Sarah Ciszek tallied 46 assists and 12 digs and Emma Smallcomb led the way with 25 digs.

The Pioneers return to action tomorrow for day two of the Georgetown Invitational as they take on Central Arkansas at 1 p.m. and Rider at 5 pm.

Set 1

  • The Pioneers jumped out to a 4-2 lead, sparked by a Makayla Dole service ace

  • After Georgetown cut the SHU lead to 4-3, back-to-back kills from Jillian Kim put SHU up 6-4

  • Trailing 8-7, the Pioneers went on a 4-1 run to take an 11-8 lead

  • After the Hoyas cut the SHU lead to 12-11, the Pios scored two points straight to take a 14-11 lead and forcing a Georgetown timeout

  • Out of the timeout, SHU went on a 4-2 run to extend the lead to 18-13 and forcing a second Georgetown timeout

  • The Pioneers built the lead to 21-14 before the Hoyas battled to cut the deficit to 21-17, forcing a SHU timeout

  • With the Pioneers leading 24-21, the Hoyas took two straight before a Dole kill gave SHU the set win
