Women's Volleyball Falls to Harvard in Five Sets

CAMBRIDGE , Mass. - The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team fell to Harvard in day one of the Harvard Invitational in five sets, (21-25, 25-19, 25-16, 12-25, 13-15), on Friday evening. With the loss SHU falls to 1-3, while Harvard opens the season at 1-0.

Sarah Ciszek led the Pioneers with 41 assists, 14 digs and 10 kills. Jillian Kim led added 18 kills, while Liisel Nelis totaled 12 kills and 17 digs. The Pioneers return to action tomorrow for day two of the Harvard Invitational as they take on Rhode Island at 10 a.m. and Colgate at 5 pm.

Set 1 - Harvard 25, SHU 21

  • Harvard jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, forcing a SHU timeout 

  • Out of the timeout, SHU went on a 10-3 run, led by two kills apiece for Jillian Kim and Gianna Scioletti

  • After Harvard cut the SHU lead to 14-13, the Pioneers went on a 3-1 run, forcing a timeout

  • SHU went up 18-14 before Harvard came storming back to take a commanding 24-20 lead, then taking the set 25-21

SET 2 - SHU 25, Harvard 19

  • SHU jumped out to a 7-3 lead, capped by a service ace from Kim

  • After the Crimson cut the SHU lead to 12-10, the Pioneers went on a 4-1 run with kills from Liisel Nelis and Kim

  • Harvard responded with a 4-0 run to force a SHU timeout

  • Out of the timeout, Harvard cut the deficit to 17-16

  • The Pioneers responded by pushing its lead to 24-19, capped by a kill from Reghan Palanchi

  • A Harvard set error clinched the set for the Pios

SET 3 - SHU 25, Harvard 16

  • SHU kept the momentum rolling and jumped out to an early 11-5 lead, led by kills from Makayla Dole, Sarah Ciszek, Kim and Nelis

  • The Crimson cut the SHU lead to as close as 13-8 before the Pios pushed it back up to 18-12

  • SHU closed the set on a 7-4 run, capped by a kill from Kim

SET 4 - Harvard 25, SHU 12

  • The two sides played to an early 5-5 tie before Harvard took a commanding 18-7 lead

  • The Crimson maintained its distance and took the set 25-12

SET 5 - Harvard 15-13

  • Harvard jumped out to a 3-0 lead, forcing SHU to call a timeout

  • Trailing 8-4, SHU went on a 6-1 run to take a 10-9 lead

  • After the Crimson battled to a 12-10 lead, the Pios scored three straight off kills from Kim, Ciszek and Dole

  • Harvard was able to score a kill for match point, followed by a block to seal the match

  • Harvard hit .245 for the match

  • SHU tallied 57 digs, 58 assists and 62 kills

  • Sarah Ciszek led the Pioneers with 41 assists, 14 digs and 10 kills
