Volleyball Falls 3-1 To RMU

The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to visiting Northeast Conference foe Robert Morris University, Saturday night at the Pitt Center. The loss drops the Pioneers to 6-10 overall and 2-2 in league play, while the Colonials improve to 13-3 on the season and 3-0 in NEC action.

SHU held RMU to .083 hitting in winning the third set, with a thrilling 28-26 come from behind win. The match saw 10 tie scores and three lead changes, with the Colonials never trailing in the first and fourth sets.

Liisel Nelis finished with a double-double, as did Sarah Ciszek, for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers return home on Friday, October 11 to host Central Connecticut State at 4:30 p.m.

How it Happened

  • The Colonials hit .232 for the match, with a .400 hitting percentage in capturing the opening set

SHU Turning Point

  • In the fourth set, SHU rallied to within two points 22-20, before a service error gave RMU the three-point margin and allowed them to secure the victory

By the Numbers

  • Nelis led all players with 22 kills, hitting .309 on the evening
  • Nelis also notched 16 digs for the double-double, as well as an ace and two assists
  • Ciszek handed out 52 assists to go with 13 digs
  • Three Colonials finished with double-digit kills on the night, led by 15 from Lauren Kolenik
  • Whitney Brown recorded 44 assists and 13 digs

First Set – RMU 25, SHU 18

  • RMU scored first and the opening set was tied just once, 1-1
  • Allena Carmody served back-to-back points to break that tie and RMU opened a 10-5 advantage, forcing a SHU timeout
  • The Pioneer were able to close within that marking just once the remainder of the set, 13-8
  • RMU pushed the lead to as many as nine, 21-12 as they finished off the victory
  • Five Colonials had multiple kills in the set

Second Set – RMU 25, SHU 22

  • The Pioneers fell behind early, 5-1, before a timeout
  • SHU rallied, scoring the next five points, to take its first lead, 6-5
  • The second set saw three ties and two lead changes, with the Pioneers largest lead coming at 8-5, and forced a RMU timeout
  • The Colonials tied the score, 8-8 and again 9-9, rattling off four straight to build a 12-8 advantage that they would not relinquish

Third Set – SHU 28, RMU 26

  • Trailing 19-14, Reghan Palanchi recorded a kill, that was followed by consecutive RMU hitting errors
  • A Nelis kill brought the Pioneers within a point, 19-18
  • RMU would stretch its lead back to four, 23-19, before a Nelis kill
  • The Pioneers fended off match point, with another Nelis kill to make the score 24-23, and an attack error from RMU tied the set, 24-24
  • Makayla Dole put a ball away to fend off the third RMU match point, and followed with another kill to give SHU the 26-25 edge
  • Alyssa Hudak tied the score, 26-26, for RMU, before Ciszek and Jasmine Roger recorded back-to-back kill for the set win

Fourth Set – RMU 25, SHU 23

  • RMU started the final set with a 7-2 advantage
  • A Palanchi kill began a Pioneer run that saw SHU battle back to tie the score12-12 on a Colonial attacking error
  • RMU scored twice after that, before a Dole kill and an RMU error brought SHU back level, 14-14

A Pioneer service error put the Colonials back in front for good, despite a late rally that saw SHU come
