Ciszek Triple-Double Leads Volleyball To 3-1 Win Over CCSU

The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team earned a 3-1 win over visiting Northeast Conference foe Central Connecticut State University, Friday evening at the Pitt Center.  SHU improves to 7-10 on the year and 3-2 in league play, while the Blue Devils fall to 7-10 overall and 3-2 in conference action.

The match featured 25 ties and 12 lead changes, with 12 ties in the opening set. The two teams split the opening sets with identical 26-24 scores, with SHU winning the opening set and CCSU the second. The Pioneers then rallied for set three and four victories.

The Pioneers return to action Saturday evening with a 6:00 pm match at Bryant University.


The Turning Point

  • With SHU leading 5-4 in the third set, Julia Murawinski landed a kill and then jumped with a Gianna Scioletti for a block to make the lead 7-4
  • Those points jumpstarted a 5-1, run that gave SHU a 10-5 lead, and would expand to 17-6 as the Pioneers earned the 25-14 set win
  • From 5-4 in the third, SHU outscored CCSU 31-12 as it took an 11-2 lead in the fourth
  • The Pioneers then rallied in the fourth set, after giving up 14 consecutive points to fall behind 16-11 and finished the set on a 14-4 run.
  • SHU finished the set with a 14-4 run

By the Numbers

  • The Pioneers had four players reach double-figure in kills, led by 14 from Liisel Nelis
  • Sarah Ciszek recorded a triple-double with 11 kills, 40 assists and 21 digs; hitting .435 for the match
  • The Pioneers hit .199 for the match, while CCSU finished at .145
  • Murawinski finished with 12 kills and four blocks, while Makayla Dole recorded 10 kills and three blocks
  • Scioletti had seven blocks on the day, to go along with nine kills
  • Madelyn Kaprelyan led CCSU with nine kills and 15 digs, a dig total equaled by Samantha McCreath 
  • Emma Smallcomb recorded a game-best 22 digs, while adding 10 assists

First Set – SHU 26, CCSU 24

  • Nelis kill began a 3-0 Pioneer run, that was capped by a service ace from Nelis and a 6-5 Pioneer lead
  • That run reached 7-2 in favor of SHU, when Palanchi put a ball on the floor, and gave the Pioneers a 10-7 advantage
  • A Ciszek kill gave SHU a four-point advantage, 13-9, 
  • CCSU rattled off three-straight to close within 13-12, when Nelis responded with back-to-back kills to push the lead back to three, 15-12
  • The Blue Devils answered with four-straight, anchored by a block from Morgan Woycik and Isabelle Roufs to retake the lad, 16-15
  • Julia Murawinski tied the set with a kill at 17-17
  • The Blue Devils scored three-straight, taking their largest lead of the match, 20-17
  • A CCSU service error, was followed by a Ciszek kill and an ace from Lilian Varga tied the set, 20-20.
  • After the Bue Devils retook the lead, a Dole kill was followed with a CCSU hitting error to give the Pioneers a 22-21 advantage
  • Madelyn Kaprelyan retied the score with a cross court kill and then joined Gala Galabova for a block that was followed by a Emma Henderson ace to give the Blue Devils set point
  • Nelis staved off the first set-point and she joined Gianna Scioletti for a block to knot the set, 24-24
  • The duo blocked the ensuing CCSU attack to give SHU set point and Emma Smallcomb served an ace to give SHU the victory

Second Set – CCSU 26, SHU 24

  • A Ciszek kill gave SHU a 10-7 edge and then the sophomore served three straight points, including a serve ace, to put the Pioneers in front, 13-7
  • CCSU scored three unanswered and used an 8-3 run to close within a point, on an ace from Erin McDermott
  • Dole hammered a kill off a CCSU player to pause the run, but CCSU struck for consecutive points to knot the score, 17-17
  • Nelis put SHU in front once again, with a kill off of the CCSU block, which was answered by a kill from Galabova
  • Dole stopped the run for a moment, 17-15, but CCSU answered with six straight to build a 21-17 advantage
  • Back-to-back Nelis kills started a 4-0 SHU run that brought the Pioneers level, 22-21
  • Kaprelyan put a ball just inside the end line to put CCSU back in front and was answered by a Scioletti kill, tying the set 22-22
  • Ciszek dumped a set into the center of the Blue Devil court for a 23-22 Pioneer advantage
  • Roufs tied the score with a kill of the Pioneer block, 23-23
  • Murawinski's kill gave SHU set point, that was fended off by a Morgan Woycik kill
  • A SHU error gave CCSU set point, 25-24 and a Roufs solo block gave CCSU the set 

Third Set – SHU 25, CCSU 14

  • Trailing 2-1 a Ciszek kill started a 4-0 SHU run that was capped with blocks from Murawinski and Scioletti to give the Pioneers a 5-2 lead, before back-to-back CCSU points
  • The Pioneers struck for five of the next six point; highlighted by a solo block from Palanchi and forced a CCSU timeout with a 10-5 SHU lead
  • Woycik earned the Blue Devils the point after the timeout
  • Murawinski, followed twice by Dole, started a 6-1 run that pushed the Pioneers lead to 16-7; the largest of the match to that point for either team
  • SHU would extend its advantage to a dozen, 24-12, and after two CCSU points, Dole ended the set with a kill 

Fourth Set – SHU 25, CCSU 20

  • A set of runs started with three straight points for the Pioneers and a 5-0 run to open an 11-2 advantage
  • Out of its timeout, CCSU uncorked its run, tallying 14 straight points to overtake SHU and build a 16-11 lead
  • Murawinski ended the run with a kill, as a 3-0 SHU run was capped by blocks from Murawinski and Palanchi to cut the SHU deficit to 16-14
  • Palanchi and Dole combined for a block to get SHU within a point, and Vargo followed with an ace to tie the score 17-17
  • Dole and Palanchi followed with back-to-back solo blocks to give SHU a 19-17 edge
  • After a Woycik kill, Ciszek dumped a second hit in for a kill and the 20-18 advantage
  • SHU pushed the lead to 22-19, before CCSU blocks made the score 22-20
  • Nelis answerd with a cross court kill and followed with a strike down the middle to give SHU match point, 24-20
  • Murawinski ended the match with a kill
