Junior tailback Ed Pricolo (Johnston, RI) rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns and the Sacred Heart University defense held Iona College to just 96 yards of total offense in a 48-7 non-conference football win on Sunday afternoon. The victory marked the first collegiate win for new Pioneer coach Paul Gorham.
The game had originally been scheduled for Saturday but was postponed due to torrential rain and a flooded field.
The Pioneers, 1-2, got its first score with 4:22 left in the first quarter when sophomore Jon Wilson (Bloomfield, CT) stripped the ball from Iona running back Rudy Arcara and ran 42 yards for a touchdown. Sacred Heart made it 14-0 with just :10 left in the first quarter on a 46-yard pass from sophomore QB Dan Ammel (White River Jct., VT) to wideout James Wright (New Haven, CT).
Pricolo, who has eclipsed the 100-yard mark three straight games, gave the Pioneers a 20-0 lead at the intermission with an eight-yard run with 11:26 left in the second quarter. The run capped an eight-play, 70-yard drive that was highlighted by a 36-yard end around by Wright that took the ball to the Iona 19-yard line.
Sacred Heart took a 27-0 lead on Pricolo's second touchdown, this one from three-yards out with 3:46 left in the third. His third TD came with :44 left in the quarter and came on a 38-yard run off left tackle that made it 34-0. Just :13 later, senior corner Mike Scott (Groton, CT) intercepted a pass for the Pioneers and returned it 42 yards for a score, making it 41-0.
Freshman Jason Payne (Cortlandt Manor, NY) finished out the SHU scoring with a two-yard run for his first collegiate touchdown with 10:34 to play.
Iona, 0-2, finally got on the board with 3:49 left to play on a three-yard run by backup QB BJ Antonelli.
