Pioneer Volleyball Outlasts Maryland-Eastern Shore in Five

FAIRFIELD, CT (September 24, 2005) - The Sacred Heart volleyball team posted a five-game win over Maryland-Eastern Shore to spilt at pair of matches at the SHU Invitational on Saturday afternoon in the William H. Pitt Center. The Pioneers took the first two games, 30-22 and 30-27, but dropped games three and four 30-26 and 30-23. SHU rebounded in game five with a 15-10 win to improve to 2-11 on the year.

SHU used some impressive runs to gain control of the match. In game two, the Pioneers ran off a 12-4 run when trailing 21-15 to gain a 27-25 advantage, forcing a UMES timeout and then closing out the game 30-27. In the deciding game five, the Pioneers wasted little time in gaining control running out to a 5-1 lead en route to the victory.

Sophomore Christine Duffy (Massapequa, NY) turned in a team-high 19 kills to lead the way. She hit .325 in the match with her 19 kills coming on 40 attempts with six errors. Senior Heather Brooks (Regina, SK) posted 13 kills with a .333 hitting percentage (13-4-27). Sophomore Samantha McMillan (Manassas, VA) registered 26 assists with 17 digs and five service aces. Freshman Katie Thomas finished with 20 digs.

For the Hawks, freshman setter Yael Rozner finished with a triple double, passing out 43 assists with 11 kills and 16 digs. She also added six service aces. Senior Eriel Jeffery came up with 14 kills while freshman Holiday Eller had 19 kills.

In the first game of the afternoon, the Saint Peter's Peahens posted a 3-1 win over Sacred Heart to finish 2-0 and in first place in the tournament. The Peahens won the first game 30-26 but dropped the second 30-26. The quickly rebounded with 30-15 and 30-13 wins to take the match.

Junior Serra Soylu posted 17 kills and 12 digs. Senior Gulhan Cakcak finished with 12 kills and 12 digs while junior Sasha Pshenychka had 15 kills and four solo blocks.

For the Pioneers, Duffy posted 13 kills and six digs while junior Charnette Porter (Framingham, MA) had eight solo blocks and a block assist. Sophomore Kim Ferris (Darien, CT) recorded 14 digs.

Maryland Eastern Shore defeats Rider University, 3-1 (30-23, 25-30, 30-27, 30-28)

The Hawks of Maryland-Eastern Shore posted a big four game victory over Rider University in game two of the tournament on Saturday. The Hawks took the first game 30-23 but dropped the second, 30-25, to the Broncs. Games three and four came right down to the wire with the Hawks grinding out 30-27 and 30-28 wins to earn the victory.

Three Hawks posted double digits for kills in freshman Chanita Wesley, Jeffery and Eller. All three posted 12 kills with Wesley adding 11 digs and Eller recording 18. Jeffery added six solo blocks to her stat total while Rozner passed out 39 assists with 10 digs on the afternoon.

The Broncs, now 5-9 on the year, got 14 kills from junior Megan Smith and 11 kills from senior Stefanie Lombardo. Lombardo also added 14 digs. Sophomore Natasja Avramovic mad 19 digs on defense for the Broncs.
