Women's Hockey Falls to RPI, 7-1

Bridgeport, CT - Freshman Allysen Weidner had two goals and one assist and Brooke Thompson and Whitney Naslund each added three assists as RPI beat Sacred Heart, 7-1, in women's ice action Friday night at the Wonderland of Ice.

RPI dominated the game offensively, out shooting the Pioneers 63-8 for the game. Pioneer goaltender Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK) kept SHU in the game with 56 saves in net.

Rensselaer dominated the first period, out shooting Sacred Heart 25-3 in the period. Sophomore Jaime Lyn-Stewart put the Engineers on the board early, scoring her sixth goal of the year at the 3:42 mark. Stewart fired one shot on net that was stopped by Boulay. However, Stewart followed the play and got her own rebound and put into the back of the net. The Engineers went up 2-0 on a power-play goal by Allysen Weidner halfway through the opening period.

The Pioneers got on the board with 5:51 left in the first. Sophomore Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) led a rush up the ice and fed the puck ahead to Whitney Dziama (Walpole, MA). Dziama fired a shot off the glove of RPI goaltender Ashley Mayr, but the rebound bounced right to Jaclyn Rideout (Willmington, MA) who hammered the loose rebound into an open net for her third goal of the year.

The Engineers reopened a two goal on a goal by Melissa Boik with 2:51 left in the first. RPI set up in the offensive zone and Boik ripped a shot from the blue-line that found its way through the pads of a screened Boulay. It was Boik's second goal of the year.

Senior Sarah Daniel put RPI up 4-1 at the 9:51 mark of the second period. Sophomore Emily Donowick carried the puck behind the Pioneer net a fed a perfect centering pass to Daniel in the slot who put a shot past Boulay for her second goal of the year.

Rossli Chace scored her first goal of the season 7:04 into the third period to extend the RPI lead to 5-1. Wiedner scored her second goal of the night with 10:39 left off a pretty behind-the-back pass from Whitney Naslund, who had two assists. Julie Aho closed out the scoring with a tally with 19 seconds left.

Sacred Heart and RPI will meet again Saturday afternoon at the Wonderland of Ice. Face-off is set for 2:00 pm.
